Christmas Tree Collection to Begin Monday

Residents encouraged to put trees out this weekend and other updates from the township

The holiday season is now officially over and the is getting into the business of 2012.

As part of that effort, weather permitting the Department of Public Works is scheduled to pick up Christmas trees as of Monday. Residents are encouraged to put their trees out at the curb this weekend so that they can be collected. All trees must have lights and ornaments removed or they will not be picked up.

The start of the new year also brings the start of a special program in the township. Running from New Years Day until Feb. 29, Howell residents will be able to take advantage of a "building amnesty program." According to an email sent out by the mayor and council the program is meant for residents who have had "undocumented construction," to get their work up to code.

Those residents taking part in the program will be able to apply for the right permits in order to avoid any penalty fees and fines. The inspections will apply the code standards at the time of construction. Examples of projects include new buildings and sheds, additions, remodels, roofing and siding among others.

The amnesty project is meant in part to ensure that work done throughout the township is safe for the residents. When selling a house or refinancing a permit for work done may need to be presented making the amnesty program beneficial to those residents as well.

For those residents taking part in the program, the current property owner is responsible for making sure all their projects are in compliance with township regulations. If a contractor did the work and it was not inspected they should be contacted so they can complete the permit process.
