Farmingdale Swears in Newest Councilman

Status of rest of council remains unresolved

At Farmingdale Borough Hall on Monday Richard Geffken officially became the newest member of the borough council.

With Deputy Clerk Kim Farrington performing the swearing in ceremony Geffken joined Mayor Jay Morgan as the only members of the governing body. The other in recent months leaving the council in a state of flux.

Mayor Morgan said Geffken was chosen from a pool of three Democrats at the July 31 meeting and Monday was the first chance they had for a formal swearing in ceremony. He was supposed to have been sworn in at last week's meeting which was cancelled without a quorum of members on the council.

Even with Geffken now on the council Morgan said he is unsure of what the next steps will be. "I still have no idea," he said. "We're still waiting for direction from the Governor's office."

The Governor's office has 30 days from the time of the vacancies to fill the empty seats, something Mayor Morgan said he is looking forward to. "As soon as we can get things back to normalcy it would be great," he said.

The Farmingdale Mayor and Council meets on the first and Tuesdays of the month with the next meeting scheduled for Aug. 21. There was no word from Gov. Chris Christie's office about when a decision will be made on the council.
