Township Working to Resolve Power Problems

Thousands still in the dark after Sandy

At 9:30 on Sunday morning a little more than 10 thousand Howell residents were without power as a result of Hurricane Sandy with temperatures in the 40's and expected to drop back into the 30's at night.

In an email from the township administration, Mayor Robert Walsh and the council said they have, and continue to work aggressively, pressuring JCPL to provide us with estimated times for restoration."

With so many residents in the dark a week after the storm the email said they have gone directly to the utility to see when they might see the power grid restored. "They are not providing any information with regards to timelines or specific neighborhoods."

Several parts of town, including the Ramtown section have been in the dark for many days and the administration said it is a problem they are aware of and working on. "We continue to actively pursue all avenues to get accurate information," the said. "We share in everyone's frustrations as most of us enter day 6 with no power."

I understand that they are prioritizing what needs to get done, the hardest hits areas first etc. But close surrounding neighborhoods regained ther power long ago. We are still without. No sight of anyone working on the problem either. Completely maddening

My issue with JCP&L is the lack of specific information they provide their customers and seemingly elected. You are in Day 6 and you should be able to articulate the challenges with specific areas of your customer base and what are the challenges faced to recover those areas (excluding beachfront communities). We all understand the magnitude of the problem, however by now should be able to provide elected officials with insight on - # of repair resources deployed to specific counties? # of repair resources per shift. Specific (streets and problem description) that are effecting powering up the grid for a specific area/town. Estimated time that resources will be deployed to repair problem areas to enable grid power up.

AdM, to clarify, when you say 10,000 residents, do you mean 10,000 households, as there are 16,000 customer households in Howell. This would mean 65%to of Howell witgout power....amazing.

Sorry, meant to say "Adam can you clarify"

Our Administration continues to work closely with JCP&L to ensure that all Howell get power back as soon as humanly possible. One of the many challenges for JCP&L is the damage to their sub-station that feeds Howell. Restoring power remains the biggest challenges. I know everyone reconizes how urgent this is.
We continue to see an enormous outpouring of support from people eager to volunteer, donate and help out. Today, at Southard school, the PAL will be serving hot meals and setting up charging stations to charge cell phones and other electronic devices.

Freewood Acres completly out. Not a power truck in sight.
ConcernedCitizen November 4, 2012 at 03:23 pm
They don't have their info correct either. We live in Monmouth Ridings off of Oak Glen, around 200 homes w/o power since Monday. JCPL "thought" we had power even after we reported it otherwise. Now who knows where we are in the queue.
Additionally the Township needs to take control and force the horse farm across from us to cut their trees on Oak Glen. Every storm we have we are w/o power for days at a clip because a tree falls on the feeder cables to our development.

Hey we need a power here in ramtown , its so sad to see my baby is freezing for how many days already
Adam Hochron (Editor) November 4, 2012 at 03:50 pm
Don't forget the Howell PAL is holding an event at the old Southard School at noon with hot food and a place to charge your electronic devices. The Howell Police Department can also still make arrangements to take residents to the shelters in Wall and Long Branch to get people out of the cold.

Kevin, we are in the same boat. I'm in Ramtown as well, with an 8 day old baby... This is really unacceptable that jcp can't even give details as to what we should expect :(

I personally called 2 times and reported my outage in Monmouth Ridings. I agree with concerned citizen. Our development always loses power because of trees on oak Glenn. Last summer, we went 5 days. We are always last. JCPL should not be allowed to get away with the lack of communication. I have not seen a truck in our vicinity yet. We lost power Monday at 2:30 pm. The storm barely started. We need information to make plans for our family and pets. Please inform us of where we stand with restoration. Unacceptable.

I'm with Abby and ConcernedCitizen. Monmouth Ridings always goes down and it's always because of a tree on Oak Glen from the horse farm-- always. This time, the tree was cleared Friday morning, but there hasn't been a utility truck back here yet. This is Day 6, and it's costing us a fortune in gas I know people out there have it worse, but come on-- this happens to us every time there's a stiff breeze.

It is ridiculous that we have heard nothing from the Township! In the two days before the storm hit we received four or five reverse 911 messages. Since the storm hit we have heard not a single word.
I am voting against every single incumbent on Tuesday, if we get a chance to vote!
Abby8 November 4, 2012 at 10:10 pm
Lets not forget , how easy it was for the township to vote for a cell tower in our backyards. Clearly, the concern is not for a better environment for our families. I can not understand the lack of communication. With the taxes we pay in Howell, the least one could expect is information. Vote Tuesday - why not write in "No cell tower " in place of any of any incumbent.

Please take a good look at what has happened to so many residents in NJ especially in the Shore area and stop complaining we have it so much better then they do,Instead of just being cold they are cold and homeless, instead of not having lights they are planning funerals for family members.I have been without electric since Monday night,we just got power and after seeing what has happened to so many from NY and NJ esp the shore area I am devastated at the loss of lives not yet counted.Living by candles and cooking on grills in the cold and wearing many layers of clothing to try to keep warm, I think those of us in Howell are very lucky and some of us very spoiled and selfish when so many have lost so much.Suck it up and be thankful.
mad as hell November 5, 2012 at 11:13 am
it was very nice to see the mayor of howell at golds gym sunday afternoon looking like he did not have a care in the world!!guess you have power!!!!!!
greatful November 6, 2012 at 08:21 pm
I think everyone should read webby' s remark. you could be a lot worse. maybe go out and volunteer your time at a shelter or township clearing crew. It seems to me all you selfish people should think twice about all your remarks....there is another storm coming and maybe this time you wont be one of the lucky ones that just lost power!

I have an idea for him; how about he introduces legislation that prevents legislators from introducing meaningless legislation in an effort to draw attention to themselves.
