Farmingdale Hook & Ladder Company #1

A short history of the Farmingdale Fire Department

In 1903, the Borough of Farmingdale officially separated from Howell Township. On January 28th that year, the Farmingdale Hook & Ladder Co. #1 was organized and bought its first piece of equipment, probably a horse or mule-pulled water pump, for $650.

Two years later the nascent fire company acquired a former drug store lot on Main Street from the widow of John Morrell. Mayor Edward Imlay and the Borough Council appointed a committee to investigate the need for a firehouse in January 1910. Committee members were James L. Hall, Clarence Shafto, Vela Bacon, and John R. Allaire, all prominent citizens and businessmen in town.

Following their recommendations, a September Ordinance was passed to build the firehouse, and another piece of property, adjoining the drug store lot, was purchased. The new firehouse was completed in July 1911.Hook & Ladder Company Trustee William H. Bartow conveyed the building and land to the Borough with the following Deed: …Whereas, Phebe A. Morrill by deed dated Jan 9, 1905 did convey unto the party of the first part the premises hereinafter described…And whereas, said Farmingdale Hook & Ladder Co No.1 has requested and by request and designation hereto annexed, signed by its President and Secretary, by virtue of a resolution duly passed by said Hook & Ladder Co, does hereby request said party of the first part to convey such premises to the said Borough of Farmingdale.

Farmingdale began using the top floor of the firehouse for its Borough Hall offices. In 1950, Mayor Edgar O. Murphy conveyed more land to the fire company and the building was expanded, roughly doubling in size. When Borough Hall was finally moved to Asbury Avenue in 1982, the Fire Company was able to use the entire building for its trucks, equipment, and offices. The Farmingdale Fire Department is running its Annual Golf Outing and Fundraiser this year on June 24th at the Spring Meadow Golf Course on Atlantic Avenue inWall Township.
