Ardena Students Lend a Hand to UNICEF

Raised money to help those in need

In addition to all the candy the first graders at Ardena School collected on Halloween, the students also learned a valuable lesson about helping others in need.

Mary Jurlina, the lead teacher at Ardena said the students had did an admirable job of helping to raise more than $400 for UNICEF by taking donation boxes around their neighborhoods. "Our students not only aided children in need, but have learned about the importance of volunteerism," she said. "That is priceless."

In addition to the candy bars and other sweets the students got the chance to help children their age across the world through UNICEF's many programs. The organization's website lists all the opportunities the fundraising efforts benefit.

The effort by the Ardena students is one that has been carried out by students across the country over the years and Jurlina said it was important for the them to be a part of it. "The first grade leaders at Ardena Elementary School have made a difference this Halloween in the lives of millions of children and their families," she said.

In addition to the students who went out and raised the money, Jurlina credited the first grade teachers at the school for helping to coordinate their efforts.
