Class Sizes at Howell High School Well Above State Average

New Jersey Department of Education report card released for districts statewide

When the New Jersey Department of Education released its school report cards on Tuesday, class sizes at Howell High School were shown to be higher across the board when compared to state averages.

For the 2009-2010 school year, the biggest difference came in the junior class where Howell High School averaged 32.1 students per class. The state average was 19.6 for that grade. The newest class of freshmen was also bigger than the state average with Howell coming in at 28.5 students per class as opposed to the state average of 19.5.

The class of 2010 also went above the state average. At Howell High School the average classroom of seniors had 28.3 students in comparison to the state average of 19.7. The smallest average class size at the school was the sophomores with an average of 27.7 students. That is still above the state average of 19.8. All told Howell averaged 24.4 students per class while the state average is 18.2.

State report cards look at a variety of factors at schools and districts across the state. Things like school environment, student performance and staff and financial data are also looked at. 

Total enrollment at the school in October had the population at 2444, which is an increase of 93 students over the previous year. This year's graduating class was the largest in the school at the time, as the then juniors numbered 641 students. The sophomores were the second biggest grade with just about 637 students, followed by the freshmen with 599 students. While they were in their last year the seniors were the smallest grade with 537 students.

With so many students, the ratio of administrators to students and faculty to students has also been above the state average over the past few years. For the school year ending last June the school averaged 214.4 students per administrator compared with the state average of 178.5. That was also an increase from 2008-2009 when the average at Howell was 206.2 compared to 176.4. 

The student to faculty ratio has also been above the state average. Last year the local school had an average of 13.4 students per teacher, while the state average was 10.8. The prior year Howell had 13.1 students per teacher while the state average was slightly higher at 11.1.
