Running Recap of Friday's State Wrestling Championships

UPDATED 9:16: Toms River South's Evan Tarver ended the night on a high note for Jersey Shore wrestlers with a win over Jack Pohlman of Passaic Valley. Pohlman, the Region IV champion had a record of 32-8 prior to the loss.

UPDATED 8:52: With two undefeated wrestlers on the mat, only one was going to be able to leave with a perfect record. Central Regional's Kalyph Hardy and Voorhees' Jadeen Bernstein combined for a remarkable 70 wins between them.  In the end, it was Bernstein picking up the 4-3 win as the Region V champion beat the Region VI champion in a hard-fought bout. 

UPDATED 8:35: Brick Township's Conor Brennan showed why he has only lost one match this year as the Region VI champion beat Francisco Colom of St. Peters Preparatory 9-4. Colom had finished second in the Region IV Tournament with a record of 36-4.

UPDATED 8:25: Middletown South's Nick Herring squeaked out a 3-2 win over CJ Cobb of Williamstown. Cobb is the Region VIII champion and had a 33-1 record prior to Friday night's action.

Brick Township's Conor Brennan is getting his first action of the night at 152.

UPDATED 8:23: Howell's Mike Shaughnessey battled hard against Michael Ferinde of Nutley. After giving up a last second takedown in regulation to tie the match, Shaughnessey took the 5-3 loss in overtime after another Ferinde takedown. Ferinde entered the tournament as the Region IV champion and had a record of 38-2.

UPDATED 8:18: Shore Regional's Luke Bush showed that region titles don't mean everything as he dominated Pelal Deeb of Passaic Tech ,17-3, at 145. Deeb had won the Region IV title and entered Boardwalk Hall with a record of 27-2.

Shaughnessey is still on the mats and Nick Herring of Middletown South is also in his first match of the night.

UPDATED 8:11: Long Branch senior Luis Filipe meet his match in his pre-quarterfinal bout. The Green Wave wrestler took on Connor Melde of Bergen Catholic and lost, 6-2. The two grapplers entered the bout with a combined record of 71-3, but in the end it was the Region II champion who prevailed. Filipe will return to the mats Saturday morning.

Shore's Luke Bush and Howell's Mike Shaughnessey are on the mats now.

UPDATED 7:56: Another pre-quarterfinal match for another Jersey Shore  wrestler and another win as Toms River South's Bryant Clagon beat Ron Hoover of Haddon Township at 130. The final score had the Indians wrestler  winning, 9-2.

Long Branch's Louis Filipe is on the mats now.

UPDATED 7:45: Manchester's Ken Theobold suffered his first loss of the tournament, to Brandon Keller of Timber Creek. Keller, the Region VIII  champion entered the tournament with a 33-3 record. Theobold will continue to wrestle in the consolations on Saturday morning.

UPDATED 7:36 Region VI champion and Toms River East sophomore Richard Lewis advanced to the quarterfinals with a 7-2 win over Dante Porrazzo of Depaul Catholic. Porrazzo was another Region I champion who had a 34-5 record prior to Friday night's match. 

Manchester's Ken Theobold is on the mats now in his pre quarterfinal match.

UPDATED 7:35 Point Pleasant Beach's Dylan Kelly wrestled well at 171 but was unable to advance after a second period pin to Mike LaBell of Lenape Valley.

UPDATED 7:29: Another Jersey Shore wrestler stays alive with style as Toms River South's Kevin Corrigan made short work of Ryan Nicostra of Hackettstown with an 11-1 win. Nicostra won the Region I title and entered Friday night with a 33-3 record.

UPDATED 7:24: Congratulations to Monsignor Donovan senior Anthony D'Anton after winning the Region VI championship  last weekend, D'Anton proved he can compete on the state level as well with a win over Tony Giancola of Collingswood at 103.

UPDATED 7:13: Not a bad way to start the pre-quarterfinals as Brick's Ghione advanced with a 6-4 win over Mike Kalimtzis of Westfield. The win came in overtime after Ghione rallied.

UPDATED 7:10: Toms River South's Evan Tarver ended the preliminary round on a high note as he beat Kyle Nerger of North Hunterdon, 2-1, at 215. Tarver will now face Jack Pohlman in the pre-quarters. Pohlman was the Region IV champion and enters the tournament with a record of 32-8. This is also the weight class where three time state champion Andrew Campolattano is waiting at the top of the bracket with a 40-0 record.

UPDATED 6:58: Manchester's Anthony Prendimano lost 7-3 to Brian Gallagher of Wallkill Valley at 171. The Hawks senior ends his season with a solid 34-3 record.

Toms River South's Evan Tarver is on the mats now at 215.

The pre-quarterfinals are already being called with Brick Memorial's Ghione on deck. 

UPDATED 6:47: Wall's Colin Egan loses, 3-2, to Lucus DelPiano at 189. 

UPDATED 6:35: It was a mixed bag at 140 for Jersey Shore wrestlers as Howell's Mike Shaughnessey beat Matthew Mangini of Bergen Catholic, 8-4. He will now face Michael Ferinde of Nutley in the second round. The Nutley wrestler won the Region IV title and has a record of 38-2.

Brick Memorial's Evan Berti saw his season come to an end with a 10-3 loss to Delran's Travis McDowell.

Point Pleasant Beach's Dylan Kelly's season ended with a loss to Mike LaBell at 171.

Manchester's Anthony Prendimano is on the mats now. 

UPDATED 6:20: Shore Regional's Luke Bush advanced with a 3-1 win over Desmond Towns of Morristown. Bush will now face Pelal Deeb, the Region IV champion from Passaic Tech.

UPDATED 6:10: The action is fast and furious but we'll keep bringing you results as soon as we get them. Toms River South's Kyle Kenny lost 10-6 to Taylor Black of Bishop Ahr.

UPDATED 5:35: Congratulations to Manchester's Ken Theobold for getting the first pin for Jersey Shore wrestlers. Theobold pinned Haddonfield's Kevin Gregorio in 3:24.  He will now face Brandon Keller of Timber Creek. Keller enters the tournament with a 33-3 record having won the Region VIII Tournament.

UPDATED 5:30: Manchester's Matt Theobold falls to Jovanni Arroyo  of Oakcrest, 16-9, at 119. Theobold's brother, Ken, will now be wrestling on the same mat against Kevin Gregorio of Haddonfield 

UPDATED 5:25 CORRECTION: Toms River North's Danny Rodriguez lost  to Clearview's John Vanbrill, 7-2, at 112. 

UPDATED 5:07: Brick Memorial's Joseph Ghione beats JFK Iselin's Carl Buttitta, 4-3, at 103. Ghione will now face undefeated Jan Rosenberg of Morris Knolls in the second round. 

UPDATED AT 5 P.M. The state wrestling finals in Atlantic City are about to begin with 20 Jersey Shore participants. With eight mats going on at once, Patch will be posting results as soon as the matches finish.

Wrestling on Saturday starts at 10 a.m.  for quarterfinals and wrestlebacks, with the semifinals and wrestlebacks at 5 p.m.  

On Sunday, the coverage will start at 10 a.m. with the championships at 2 p.m.
