Community Forum to be Held on Random Drug Testing of Students

The community will discuss the possibility of randomly drug testing its students on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. in the high school media center

The school district will hold an open community forum on the possibility of random drug testing its students on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. in the high school media center.

The Board of Education’s Policy Committee announced that it was considering moving forward on developing a policy that would permit random drug testing of its students in October.

The concept is still under review, Vice President Eric Schubiger said at the board’s meeting in December.

“We want public feedback,” he said.

In a non-scientific Lacey Patch poll, 70 percent of voters would be in support of the school district randomly drug testing students.

The idea was initially recommended to the board in January when a resident voiced concerns about the rising drug problem in Lacey Township.

Schubiger previously said drug testing is something the district’s policy committee, which is made up of him, board members Maureen Tirella and Bruce Carney and Superintendent Dr. Sandra Brower, has been actively considering through research.

To attend the forum, RSVP to Teresa McCarron at 609-971-2002 or via email at tmccarron@laceyschools.org.

In my old high school they did random drug testing the year after I left 7 years ago. They way they would do it was, people playing sports automatically get tested. And then once a week they will randomly select 25 students out of a computer drawing and then call them down to nurses office to take a test. 1st failed is just a warning 2nd failed is counseling at school 3rd failed is a week suspension 4th failed is expulsion

Most of these questions were brought up at the meeting. However, the goal is to help students with drug problems, not just punish them or hide them somewhere else. I hope you all show up at the following meetings. The administration was welcoming to all opinions and view points.
