8 Candidates File For 3 Board of Education Seats

Two incumbents seek re-election; David Flaherty will not run for new term

Eight Howell residents have filed petitions to contend for three open Board of Education seats.

Only two incumbents filed by Tuesday's 4 p.m. deadline to seek new terms, as Sheryl Roses and Gene Tanala seek re-election. Board member David Flaherty decided not to mount a re-election bid.

Also running in the April elections are Renee Altshul, Amy Fankhauser, Stephen M. Levine, Albert Miller, Waldemar Panek and John VanNoy. The candidates are each vying for three-year terms.

The three winners in the election will join Mary Cerretani, Suzanne M. Brennan, Patrick Dowling, Joseph Moscato Jr., Timothy P. O'Brien and Jeannette Smith on the board for the coming year.

Residents also will get their chance to vote on the tax levy needed to support the Board of Education's 2011-12 budget. While it has not been introduced, it is believed the tax levy will be flat, with no increase from last year according to Ronald Sanasac, the board secretary and the district's business administrator.
