HHS Student Vying for National Scholarship

Prize could include money for local Pop Warner league

For more than a decade Courtney Kalafsky has been part of the Howell Pop Warner program starting as a flag football cheerleader in 2000 and working her way up.

Now, as she prepares to graduate from Howell High School Kalafsky is a semi-finalist for a scholarship that could help her and benefit the league that she has spent so much time supporting. In order to do that, she needs help from the community to win the prize.

During her time with Pop Warner the team won two national championships and Kalafsky was named as a 2nd Team All-American Scholar four times in nine years. She has also proven herself to be a solid student and is getting ready for the next step in her career.

With all her successes Kalafsky applied for a scholarship called Leaders and Scholars sponsored by Metro PCS. As part of her application she said she would help the Pop Warner league if she won the prize money.

That money, she said could be used for a new sound system for the team's field, renovating two bathrooms at the facility and cleaning up the cheerleader boxes in addition to buying other supplies.

Away from the field Kalafsky is a student at the Scholars' Center for Humanities and is ranked 12th out of 612 students in the Howell senior class. She also serves as president of the school's National Honor Society and is a varsity cheerleader during football and basketball.

As she prepares to choose where she will continue her academic career Kalafsky said she plans to pursue a double major in English and Secondary Education.

Kalafsky is one of 17 semi-finalists for the scholarship and has already won a $2500 scholarship. If she wins the contest she would win a $10,000 scholarship and the matching amount going to the Pop Warner team. Voting on this website started on March 17 and runs until March 31.
