Howell Township Education Foundation Announces Two New Events

A 5K race and an awards dinner highlight a busy end of the year for local organization

The Howell Township Education Foundation announced two new events that will keep the community busy between now and the end of the school year.

The first one is the start of what they hope will be a long standing tradition with a "Evening of the Stars." That event is scheduled for Friday March 25 at 7 p.m. at Middle School North.

At the event four Howell alums, a former district employee and one of the district's programs that will be recognized. This year's "Star" recipients include Howell Police Chief Ronald T. Carter as well as Howell High School teacher and board of education member Sherry Roses. They will be joined as the first local residents honored by David Van Vliet who served 10 years in the Marine Corp all around the world, and Howell High school graduate Kevin Zealand.

Mr. Zealand serves as Vice President and CEO of the AIDS Resource Foundation for Children, which assists children and families who are affected by HIV and AIDS. Those four will be honored along with Bernadine Borowick, the district's former Supvervisor of Language Arts and Social Studies, who is also a founding member of the foundation.

In addition to the individuals honored, the district's middle school's TSA program, which stands for Technology Students' Association will also be honored. The TSA "promoted the advancement of technology education each each of Howell Township's three middle schools," according to a release by the foundation.

When the school year starts to wind down and the temperatures start to rise, the foundation will take its activities outside. This includes the annual 5K Race/Walk on June 4. The event will be even more important to the local schools, as a $1000 grant will be awarded to the school that has the highest percentage of participants based on their enrollment numbers.

Participants will be asked to register as being with one of the schools in the district when they sign up for the event. Last year there were more than 150 people in the race with everyone from families to individuals taking part. The money raised then was given to teachers who applied for grants to improve their classroom work.
