Mustang Classic Shows Off State Wrestling Talent Once More

Brick Memorial takes two silvers; Howell, Wall each garner one silver

The Mustang Classic is annually an early season showcase of some of the best wrestling talent in the state.

The 2011 edition of the tournament, at , was no different: Delbarton, Paulsboro, West Essex and Timber Creek all were in attendance, as were Shore Conference regulars Howell, Wall and host Brick Memorial.   Seven of the teams at the tournament – Timber Creek, Brick Memorial, Howell, St. Peter’s Prep, Ocean Township and Paulsboro – are ranked in the top 20 in the state

For the locals, it was a tough day, with Wall and Howell each school getting just one wrestler through to the finals, while two Brick Memorial wrestlers advanced. All four went home with silver.

At 113, Joe Ghione of Brick Memorial lost a 3-1 decision to Christian Innarella of Delbarton, while teammate  Alec Donovan of Brick Memorial lost an 11-2 major decision to Timber Creek’s Brandon Keller at 132. Keller finished fifth in the state at 125 last March. At 182, Nathan Litowsky of Howell fell to Jeff Velez of Brearley in a 3-1 decision, and in the 220-pound weight class, Don Hamill of Wall lost to Colton Bigelow of Ocean in an 11-2 major decision. Bigelow, finished third in Region VI last season wrestling at heavyweight, is seen as a strong prospect for a state title at 220.

The host Mustangs had five more wrestlers reach the semifinals and wrestle for third place. Sean Stephenson took third at 120 pounds with a 10-5 decision over Brandon Goldberg of Absegami, but teammates Cliff Ruggiero (138), Evan Berti (145), Tyler Richardson (160) and Anthony Miller (182) all finished fourth.

Howell received a third-place finish from Zach Bohm, who nipped Brick Memorial’s Richardson in a 1-0 decision, while Matthew Sulkowski took fourth at 195, falling to Sean Redden of Delsea in a 3-1 decision.

Wall’s Aldo Guisse lost a 2-1 decision to William Porch of Delsea to take fourth at heavyweight.
