Van Noy Takes BOE Work to National Level

representative of the school board in many capacities.

In his time as a member of the Howell Board of Education John Van Noy has served several key roles including chairman of the finance committee. Along with that, Van Noy has been tasked with taking the message from the board to Trenton and Washington DC.

Van Noy recently traveled to Washington as a representative at the National School Boards Association 40th Annual Federal Relations Network Conference. The conference is a chance for local representatives to meet and urge members of congress to focus on educational priorities.

Van Noy said the grassroots effort is an important one as districts struggle to work through difficult economic times. "We must ensure that all local school districts have greater flexibility to make educationally sound decisions and Congress adequately funds public education so we can continue to advance student achievement," he said.

With the recent implementation of the budget cuts Van Noy said it is important for the elected officials to continue to help local schools for things like Title I and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. He also said areas like school safety should be a priority as well.

Working at the local, state and federal level, Van Noy said he believed it was important for local districts to be tasked with determining how best to use their funding. He said the members of the conference asked members of congress to see the benefits of "local school district governance," in a way that "ensures that maximum local flexibility and decision-making are not eroded through the US Department of Education actions."

Following his time in Washington Van Noy said he believed the members delivered a valuable message to the elected officials. "Congress and the US Department of Education must obtain meaningful input from local school boards, as local school boards must have the ability to make on the ground decisions that serve the best interests of our local school districts."

The board is scheduled to meet tomorrow at 8 p.m. at Middle School North.
