UPDATE: Lady Rebels Topple Braves

Rebels tag Freehold Township boys lacrosse while girls topple Marlboro.

After falling to Freehold Township for the last five times, Howell (2-0) finally got the best of their closest counterpart, in a 8-5 win over the Patriots at Howell High School on Wednesday afternoon.

Senior captain Kevin Scott scored four goals as the Rebels won their second game of the season to remain undefeated.

The Rebels jumped out to a 4-0 lead which was enough to hold off Freehold Township. The game got decidedly closer in the final quarter when the visiting team reeled off four goals for a near comeback.

The Lady Rebels also had a big day as they blew out Marlboro 17-7. Tara Benedetti had six goals to lead her team, while Alexa Masion was right behind her with five. After that dynamic duo, Maria Madsen and Chynna Chan each had two goals.

Also helping in the win were scores from Alyssa Aboff and Amanda Mauro who recorded their first goals of their varsity careers.

Coach Christina Nunez said her squad played a better game in the second half than they did in the first which helped them prevail.

The girls kept up their hot start on Thursday with a hard fought 12-10 win over Manalapan. Alexa Masino was the leading scorer for her team with four goals while Benedetti had two. Cassie Petty also netted a pair of goals for the squad as did Lauren Christie. The last two goals came from Madsen and Chan with one each.

On the defensive side of the ball, Stephanie Lehner faced a barrage of 26 shots and made an impressive 16 saves.

The game came down to a second half scramble as the teams were tied at five at the half. In the end, the home team was able to prevail. With the win the girls improved to 2-0 in the conference and 3-0 overall.

The Rebels will now hit the road and take on Ocean on Friday, April 8 at 4 p.m., as they aim to stay undefeated. The girls meanwhile are scheduled to return to action on Monday when they will host the Mustangs of Brick Memorial.
