Howell Lions Set to Make History

Junior Pee Wee Blue to compete in Regional Tournament this weekend.

For a program filled with rich history, there is always time to add more awards to their books.

The Howell Lions Pop Warner organization can add this year's Junior Pee Wee - Blue squad to be to their list of annually impressive teams, after they won the New Jersey State Tournament last weekend at Holmdel High school.

Prior to the state tournament, the Lions' sported a strong 9-0-1 record, and eventually took down long-time rival Asbury Park, 18-6, for the Shore Conference title on Oct. 30.

The Lions toppled Franklin in the first round of the state playoffs, 14-6, behind and inpenetrable defense that allowed just 29 yards and one first down throughout the game.

Nick Lago, Ernie Onesti, and Shawn Scully anchored the impressive defensive line that lead Howell to the victory.

Running back Braedon Baldwin carried the load for Tom Bonham's team, carrying the ball for 160 yards and both touchdowns in the win. Eddie Morales added a much-needed extra point to seal the win, giving the Lions' the title.

The Lions defense continued to improve through the state championshp game, where they took down Bridgewater, 6-0, officially becoming one of the final 32 Junior Pee Wee teams across the country.

This time, Howell gave up just two first downs and 20 yards throughout the game. Lago, Onesti and Scully all played vital roles, once again, on the defensive line, and safety Tyler Thompson, cornerback Kevin Lindon and linebacker Kyle Bonham all came up with interceptions -- with Bonham's coming late in the game with Bridgewater driving down the field in an attempt to tie the game -- to ensure the win.

A.J. Calabro lead the Lions with six tackles as outside linebacker.

Anthony Lombardo, Ryan Mazik, Baldwin and Morales all provided Howell with a strong running attack, compiling 120 yards. Morales connected with Thompson for a crucial 19-yard pass, and later, Morales went to the air again, hitting Mazik for a 14-yard touchdown pass -- the only score of the game.

Howell will look to advance to the Pop Warner Super Bowl, which is played annually in Orlando, Florida at Disney's Wide World of Sports, this weekend, when they take on Maryland/DC Conference champions, Beacon House Falcons.

The game will be played at Holmdel High school, on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 1 p.m.

Along with Bonham, the Lions are coached by Shawn Scully, Ken Thompson, Alex Lago, Shane Baldwin, Eddie Morales,  Ernie Onesti, and Jim Baldwin
