Howell Prevails in Win Over Middletown North

Mike Liero's two goals lead Rebels to victory.

WALL -- Much like their loss against Brick on Tuesday night, the Rebels allowed their opponents to crawl back into the game.

This time, however, the Rebels (11-5, no. 28) were able to scratch out the victory.

Mike Liero scored twice in a 5-4 win over the Middletown North Lions (8-6, no. 41) at Gold Coast Arena in Wall, Saturday night.

The Lions battled throughout the end of the game, out-shooting the Rebels 29-26 on the night, with 16 of those shots coming in the final period.

Despite the win, Howell head coach Bill Daley was not impressed.

"I think definitely we played their game and their style of hockey," he said, "I told them not to play down to them and we did."

Mike Liero scored twice in the first three minutes to give Howell the early 2-0 lead, but the Lions would fight back to make it 2-1.

Later, in the second period, Brandon Hodes would score to give the Rebels the 3-1 advantage.

Yet again, Middletown North answered -- cutting the lead 3-2.

Mike Kochenash would score at the end of the second to give Howell the 4-2 lead and Brandon Yaegel would score the eventual game-winning goal in the third period as the Rebels would take the game 5-4.

Despite not scoring Eddie Pyskaty added three assists on the night.

Zack Peras stopped 25 of 29 shots in the victory.

Both teams were scoreless on the powerplay. Howell went 0/2 while the Lions went scoreless on their three extra-man advantages.

"[Brandon] Yaegel had a nice set up goal," Daley said, "Our third line definitely earned some more ice time as well."

Howell will take on Jacskon Memorial on Tuesday night before their big match-up against Toms River South Wednesday night in Toms River.

"Try to get back to our style of hockey," Daley said when asked what needs to be changed, "Both games should be our games."

The Rebels will take on Jackson Memorial at 8:15 at Gold Coast Arena.
