Howell's Jones Makes His Mark on the Course

Dawson Jones finished sixth at Monmouth County Golf Championship.

While most 13-year-olds are concerned about an upcoming middle school graduation, or even the quick-moving process of becoming adults, there are always a few that are a little ahead of the pack.

Dawson Jones, an eighth grader at Howell Middle School South and an an avid golfer, finished sixth in the Monmouth County Golf Championship last week. Even at such a young age, Jones showed he can compete on a higher level.

Jones made his climb to sixth place through a driving rain on Sunday morning, shooting a plus-one 73 to advance 17 spots from his Saturday finish, at the tournament held at Charleston Springs golf course in Millstone.

The 5'2, 110-pound Jones shot a plus-six 78 on Saturday, finishing 23rd out of the 25 participants who qualified for the final round, before his impressive Sunday score.

His short game proved to be an excellent attribute to his game, putting just 26 times that lead to his two-under back nine on Sunday.

Along with his impressive short-game, Jones drive is averaged at 262 yards on his drives, a phenomonal feat for someone his age.

Jones says he plans to play on the NJ Junior PGA tour this year, preparing him to play for Tim Hogan next year at Howell High school.

Despite his incredible skills, golf was never Jones' first love, as the 13-year-old gave up baseball to pick up a golf club, and it has paid huge dividends for him.

Jones also plays year-round at Eagle Ridge golf club in Lakewood, where he is a member.
