Lady Rebels Win Holmdel Relays

Girls shine as spring track season gets underway

The Howell Lady Rebels had one of their best days of the season this weekend when they made the trip to the Holmdel Relays on Saturday.

By the time the day was done, the girls dominated the Division 2 field for a first place finish. The day went so well that with 100 points, they finished well ahead of the home team, who finished a distant second with 69 points.

Right from the start the day went well for the local team as they finished second in the medley relay for their division. With a time of 13:22.77 their time was behind East Brunswick, but also ahead of Lacey thanks to the efforts of Francesca Dee, Jamie Hand, Laura Kochenash and Becky Adu.

The best event of the day for Howell may well have been the 400 meter hurdles where Kendal Hand took the top spot with a time of 10:06.44. Ally Moreland finished in third with a time of 1:12.27, while Adu finished ninth with a solid 1:15.99.

Another win for the squad came in the 4x100 relay as Antoanequette Bronisevsky, Erin Madsen, Monet Masters and Dana-Lynn Waggner finished first with a time of 52.88. That was almost a full second faster than the home team Hornets.

Relays proved to be a strength for the Lady Rebels as they also won the 4x200 meter relay thanks to Madsen, Moreland, Adu and Bronisevesky who ran a 1:51.54. East Brunswick finished second in the event with a time of 1:52.48.

In the field events Loredanna Gemignani finished third in the shot put with a throw of 31 feet even, while Amy More finished fifth with a throw of 28 feet. Amy Moore finished fourth in the discus with a distance of 78-8, while Amanda McClintock finished fifth with a throw of 76-5.

Gemignani also performed well in the javelin, finishing third with an impressive distance of 97-09. Bronisevesky also did well in several events, including winning the long jump as she soared a distance of 15-1 for the win. Her closest competition in the event was Courtney Jankowski of Barnegat who flew a distance of 14-10.25.

Bronisevesky also finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 31-5.25, while teammate Melody Walthers finished third with a total jump of 30-0.5.

From the distance jumps to the height jumps, the Lady Rebels showed they were there to compete as Monet Masters cleared 8-6 in the pole vault and Kristin Murray reached the eight foot mark. That was good enough for second and third place finishes respectively to round out the action for the team.

The Howell boys did not have quite as much success on the day, but were able to record a few points at the event. In the 4x200 meter relay the Rebels finished in sixth place thanks to the combined efforts of Steve Nunziato, Tommy Cafiero, Sean Del Gado and Mike Porter. They also finished sixth in the 1600 sprint medley relay. Cafiero and Nunziato teamed up with David Jimmerson and Billy Donahue to earn another point for their team.

In the discus, Brandon Cerretani finished in sixth with a throw of 127-3. He also finished sixth in the javelin with a throw of 133-4. One of the best performances of the day for the boys squad came from Andrew Spampanato who took second in the long jump relay with a total leap of 17-7.5. He continued that success in the triple jump with a total leap of 36.9.
