Rebels Rely on Veterans in 2011

Howells baseball program looks to take the next step forward in Eric Johnson's second season.

In Eric Johnson's first season as the head coach of the Howell Rebels, he could not have predicted a more magical season.

In 2010, the Rebels took huge steps in re-building their program, finishing 15-10 and tallying some impressive victories, most notably their eight-run comeback over Christian Brothers Academy in the Shore Conference Tournament.

In Johnson's second year, the Rebels will look to rely on their pitching staff to lead them through their difficult schedule.

"We believe we have a pitching staff that can keep us in every game we play," Johnson said.

Anthony Carabajal, Mark Doyle, and Dan Watson look to be the key arms of that pitching staff in 2011. All three players contributed to the team's success last year.

Jesse Ferigno, Travis White and Rob Hodge will be vital newcomers to the team as well as Will Reipe.

Coach Johnson said he knows competing in the A North will not be easy, but he has faith his team will be successful. "We believe we have a pitching staff that will keep us in every game we play," he said.

The Rebels were set to open on Friday, Apr. 1 at home against Freehold Township, but the game has been postponed due to rain.

Howell will travel to take on Southern Reigional on Saturday, Apr. 2 at 10 a.m.
