Shaughnessy Still Alive After OT Loss

Senior falls into consolation bracket of state wrestling tournament in Atlantic City.

Howell senior Mike Shaughnessy has had an incredibly strong wrestling season.  Heading into the state finals at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, the senior had only lost three bouts all year.

One loss was in overtime at last week's Region VI Tournament.

On Friday in Atlantic City,  Shaughnessy started the weekend with a bout against Matthew Mangini, a junior from Bergen Catholic. He got the night started off with an 8-4 win, setting up a pre-quarterfinal match against Michael Ferinde of Nutley. Shaughnessy was winning late into the match before his opponent picked up a takedown in the closing seconds. Heading into overtime it was anybody's contest to win or lose before Ferinde picked up a takedown to send his opponent into the consolations.
