National Night Out Gives Residents A Chance To Meet, Interact With Responders

Howell Police Chief Ronald Carter has been in the township all his life and still remembers knowing everyone in town and sharing that common bond.
A lot has changed since then but the chief said events like Tuesday's National Night Out was a chance to enjoy even a small piece of that community spirit. "It's something we should do more than once a year," he said. "It reminds me of my younger days when the town was more close knit."
The night is meant to promote crime prevention and the chief said growing up in the township they had a different way of doing that. "When I was a kid you couldn't do anything bad because everyone knew our parents," he added with a laugh.
Mayor Bill Gotto said he was glad the night provided a chance for the township to come together and get to know their first responders. "We use it as a way to showcase some of the stuff that a lot of people don't get to see unfortunately unless there's a real emergency," he said "It gives people a little understanding of what it's all about with the emergency services in Howell."
The Mayor said he is hoping to see more events like Tuesday's during the year including similar demonstrations at next year's Howell Day.
