Between August 12, 2013 and September 18, 2013 Zillow is reporting that there have been approximately 994 houses sold all over Howell.  That is an amazing number.  Howell has become not only desirable but prestigious by some accounts.  There are many factors that contribute to this “prestige”.  Some people tout the excellent shopping, others the easy access to major highways like 195, the Garden State Parkway and the Turnpike.  Without traffic (and not at the height of rush hour) we are about 1 hour away from NYC and as well as Philly.  The close proximity to the Shore is another draw.  We have excellent restaurants, fast food joints and ethnic eateries as well.  While I wish we had a Town Square like Spring Lake Heights or Freehold Borough that provide sidewalks and cafes we do have the Manasquan Reservoir and a dog park.  Howell has great schools, houses of worship, medical practices, close proximity to two very good hospitals and a diverse mix of people.  I especially love the wild life.  The birds, the deer, the possum, ground hogs, bull frogs, toads, birds of every type even birds of prey all contribute to that wonderful feel that Howell has.  It is a bit city and a bit country.  We seem to have the best of both worlds.   There is certain calmness about Howell.  The people are friendly for the most part and it is a nice place to live.  Apparently there is a housing demand because there are a lot of new houses being built and prices are rising.  Howell has certainly grown up since I moved out here in 1999.  There was less traffic then, less stores, more wooded spaces.  I’ve seen so much development over the years and I always had mixed feelings about it.

There are some historic places here and there.  I wish there was more preservation of older homes, farm houses, buildings and places.  I noticed the old farmhouse on Aldrich Road is under contract.  It is over 113 years old.  Will that property be developed?  Will we see $600,000 luxury homes pop up?  It is a great location right across from the school, close to commuter transportation to NYC and right up the block from the Pantry (formerly WAWA) open 24/7.  Time will tell.  Some call development progress others lament the destruction of open space.  It all depends on what glasses you are looking through.

My wish list:  I Would like to see development of our park and recreation areas to include adequate places to Rollerblade, walk and ride your bike on a beautifully paved surface and the development of a town square area that could provide places where people could walk around and enjoy a cup of coffee and pastry in an environment surrounded by trees and benches so that you could meet your neighbors in a social environment.  Ocean Grove has a nice little area like that.  I think Howell could develop something similar, even if just on a seasonal basis.
