Local Scout Project Helps Area Law Enforcement

Eagle Scout project benefits K-9 Unit

When Devon Rodgers was looking for something to do for his Eagle Scout Project he looked outside the township and found his answer with the Monmouth County Sheriff's Department.

Rodgers, a member of Boy Scout Troop 258, built an obstacle course that the K-9 members of the department can use to work on their fitness and agility. "I'm a dog lover, and I knew I wanted to do something for animals, but I also wanted to give back to those in law enforcement who do so much for us," he said.

It took 335 hours and the help of other members and leaders of his troop as well as volunteers, friends and family but Rodgers finally finished the work. He also got a hand from the Monmouth County Division of Buildings and Grounds who donated the materials for the project.

By the time it was done the course at 16 structures built including a cat walk, hurdles, low crawl and boxes.

Sheriff Shaun Golden, also a Howell resident, said Rodgers' project will go a long way in helping the dogs. "I commend Devon and his entire troop for their dedication and commitment to such an important project," he said. "Agility training is essential for patrol dogs since it builds confidence and self esteem, and, it also maintains the strong bond between a canine and its handler."

The course is currently located at the old Youth Detention Center off of Dutch Lane but it will be moved to the Monmouth County Police Academy according to Golden. In addition to the county K-9 officers local departments will also be able to utilize the course.

Rodgers said he is glad his hard work will be put to good use. "I'm hopeful this project that was developed, planned and carried out through leadership, will help me earn my Eagle," he said. "Either way, it was a great experience. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work on such an important project."
