Howell Recognizes Veterans on Monday

A busy week in Howell starts with a solemn ceremony at the former seat of the township government.

The annual Veterans Day Ceremony is scheduled to be held today at 11 a.m. at the old Town Hall on Preventorium Road. The administration will join the local post of the Veterans of Foreign War to recognize local residents who have served in the armed forces. From Howell the ceremony will move to Farmingdale for the second part of the service.

Tomorrow will also be a busy day in the township starting with a Community and Business Expo at the old Southard School. The event is being sponsored by the Howell PAL as well as the Howell Chamber of Commerce. Vendors will be on hand starting at 5 p.m. and there will also be demonstrations about safety with the holiday season rapidly approaching.

The week will progress from the old Town Hall to the old Southard School to the new Municipal Building on Tuesday night with a meeting of the Howell Township Council. There is a relatively light agenda for the council. There is an ordinance on the agenda to purchase a Caterpillar Emergency Generator for $312,468. It will be purchased as part of the National Joint Powers Alliance.

There is also a public hearing on the ordinance that will allow the township to purchase property on Mariners Cove that was damaged by Hurricane Irene and convert it to open space. Also on the agenda is an ordinance to be introduced that would allow the township to purchase and install a radio tower, antennae and equipment to install at the old Municipal Complex. The cost would be $265,000 with the issuance of $193,500 of bonds and notes.

Rounding out the agenda is the introduction of an ordinance that would change the township’s serious incident notification policy. The change would involve the way information is relayed from by the township manager from the Howell Township Police Department. Because of the Thanksgiving holiday this is the only scheduled council meeting for the month. The council will next meet on December 10.
