Slain officer served as police explorer before joining Lakewood force

Christopher Matlosz was one of the newest members of the Howell Police Explorer's Club in the summer of 1997. That was the beginning of a career in law enforcement that ended too soon when he was shot and killed in the line of duty in Lakewood in January 2011.  This past week Matlosz was honored by the Howell Police Department not only for making the ultimate sacrifice during his service with the Lakewood Police Department but also for his time with his hometown officers. Plaques honoring Matlosz will hang in the police department building. In addition, Matlosz's mother Jane Colaio was presented with a shadow box of items officers used while representing her son in the annual Police Unity Tour. When a police officer is killed, it sends terror throughout the people's hearts, because if even a law enforcer is not safe, who is really safe from attacks? I think that is why so many enforcers were deployed to find the killer, and to bring him to justice. These men need to be commended for a job well done. - http://www.starrausten.com   more ›

Crockam showed no emotion when Superior Court Judge Wendel E. Daniels announced the sentence.  Matlosz's fiance, Kelly Walsifer, appeared composed as she read a statement to the court before the sentencing. Now should be the time for celebration, Walsifer said, as she was supposed to marry Matlosz next month, on April 21. "That's what I should be thinking about — our wedding," said Walsifer, who attended the sentencing despite battling a cold. "The defendant stole that from us." "Mr. Crockam was luckier than Chris. Crockam Verdict Helps Bring Closure to Officer's Murder

A jury found Jahmell Crockam guilty of murdering Lakewood officer Christopher Matlosz

While providing closure to a crime that changed many lives 13 months ago, a guilty verdict for Jahmell Crockam also serves as a somber reminder to those serving in law enforcement that their lives are on the line daily. What was possibly the first deadly shooting of a police officer in Ocean County's history, officers said, shows that crime is no longer something that's reserved for the cities. "It brings home the reality that this is a dangerous job," said Manchester's Chief of Police Brian Klimakowksi. Officers can find themselves in situations in which they can be hurt — or worse — in an instant. Lakewood patrolman Christopher Matlosz was conducting a routine patrol on Jan. 14, 2011, when he spotted Crockam and identified him as a man …
