Deadline extension applies for homeowner, renter and business registration with SBA
Residents impacted by Superstorm Sandy now have until May 1 to register for individual disaster assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), according to a prepared statement from the governor's office. The deadline extension also applies for homeowner, renter, and business registration with the Small Business Administration (SBA) for Disaster Loan Assistance. Businesses applying for SBA Economic Injury loans still have until July 31 to apply. The loans are for businesses that did not suffer any physical damage, but lost revenue in Sandy's aftermath. In the more than four months since Hurricane Sandy arrived in New Jersey and caused massive destruction to its coastal communities, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has distributed more than $4 billion in aid, loans, and flood insurance payouts, the agency announced recently. FEMA provides regular updates relating to funding totals and the number of residents who have availed themselves of the agency's services as it continues to work in New Jersey to provide assistance following Sandy. Randall Kidd’s story isn’t unique. A Union Beach resident, he’s faithfully paid into the National Flood Insurance Program for years, insuring his home against the kind of flood damage caused by Hurricane Sandy with a $217,000 policy he hoped would make him whole. After his home was destroyed by the late October storm, Kidd set about filling out the appropriate paperwork, meeting with adjusters who came in from out of state and waiting for the check to arrive so he could start to work. Finally, the check did come, but for $89,000, less than half of what contractors have told him it will cost to rebuild his home. The administration has made 16,800 loans since the hurricane hit New Jersey.
In just three months since Hurricane Sandy struck the East Coast, the U.S. Small Business Administration has approved more than $1.1 billion in disaster loans to residents and business owners affected by the storm. According to a release from the SBA, approximately 16,700 individuals have received loans, making Sandy the country's third largest disaster in terms of loaned dollars. Currently, Sandy sits behind 2005's Hurricane Katrina and its $10.8 billion in SBA loans, and 1994's Northridge, Calif., earthquake, which totaled $4 billion in loans. Wednesday, three grants totalling more than $9.2 million were approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help cover the cost of public assistance and debris removal related to Hurricane Sandy. The funding will be used to reimburse a significant percentage of costs incurred by Belmar and Marlboro Township as well as the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management. According to a release from Sen. Frank Lautenberg's office Wednesday afternoon, Belmar will receive $4,062,468 for emergency debris removal to clear roadways for emergency vehicles in the aftermath of Sandy. Money to help with staffing for two years
The Squankum Fire Department will receive $450,000 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) thanks to a grant which will help provide members for a two-year period. According to a press release from Sen. Frank Lautenberg's office, the money is coming as part of the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Program. "New Jersey's first responders risk their lives to keep our communities safe, and this federal funding will help ensure that Howell Fire District No. 1 is adequately staffed and even better prepared for emergency situations," Lautenberg stated in the release. The Federal Emergency Management Agency may be able to provide temporary housing or rental assistance to insured homeowners displaced by Hurricane Sandy, it reaffirmed recently, and it's urging residents in need to reach out. With many homeowners waiting for insurance checks to arrive, FEMA realizes that housing assistance may still be needed in many cases. FEMA may be able to help if any of these situations apply: Residents can register online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or m.fema.gov. They can also visit a disaster recovery center, or call the FEMA helpline at 800-621-3362 (TTY 800-462-7585) or 711/VRS. FEMA releases search engine allowing residents to learn more about base flood elevation
New "Advisory Base Flood Elevations" are now posted to this interactive map from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which the agency says should provide a post-Hurricane Sandy picture of flood risk as residents rebuild. Residents can input an address and see what the advisory base flood elevation is specific to that location, as FEMA updates its site.
