Man Dies in Howell Fire

Home is located in Oak Hill Trailer Park.

A Howell man whom neighbors described as "in his 40s" died Sunday morning after a fire at the Oak Hill Trailer Park, according to the park's manager. Manager Keith Lackey could not immediately confirm the identity of the man, but said that officials told him a man in the home - located on the corners of Man O' War Lane and Seattle Slew Drive - died of smoke inhalation.  Neighbors described the occupant of the residence as "quiet" and "always out with his dog." It was not immediately clear whether the dog was in the home at the fire.  Police said they received a call for fire and smoke conditions around 10:30 a.m. and by the time a Patch reporter arrived at 10:50 a.m., the fire had been extinguished. Howell tops Freehold in charity softball game

Playing on the same field that major league stars like Cole Hamels and Ryan Howard have honed their skills on Freehold Township and Howell police officers and firefighters came together to benefit two local families.  By the time the night was over the Howell squad had come away with a dominating win but everyone involved agreed that the final score took a back seat to the overall good the game did. "It's just about bringing guys from Freehold Township and Howell together for a good cause to help out two kids in need," said Jamie Burdge of the Freehold Township police department.  The game benefitted the family of Reese Behnken, a young girl diagnosed with Metachromatic Leukodystrophy and Evan Perkowski who was diagnosed with an inoperable…

Small Fire at St. Veronica's Rectory Handled by Southard Department

Oil Heater fan malfunction blamed for fire

On Sunday afternoon the Southard Fire Company was dispatched to a smoke condition at the Rectory of St. Veronica’s for a possible fire. While there was nothing visible from the outside there was a smell of smoke on the inside of the building. While responding firefighters used thermal image cameras to check the building, the fire had been controlled by a resident of the rectory using a fire extinguisher. Chief Steve Hadgkiss said the fire occurred between the first and second floors.  The chief said the cause of the fire appeared to be a malfunction of the electric fan of the oil heater.
