Howell Council Closes a Chapter with Town Hall Meeting

October 16 meeting to be held at new building

When Mayor Robert Walsh gaveled Tuesday night's council meeting into adjournment he did so for what will likely be the last time at the Preventorium Road Town Hall.  The next time the council is scheduled to meet the plan is for that to be the first meeting in the new Municipal Building, formerly known as the Global Building. As they sat at the dais for the last time some members of the council looked back fondly at their time in the building while looking forward to the future.  Councilman Juan Malave said in his time on the council the building has been a special place for him and the residents of the township. "I believe that not just for me, but I speak for the rest of us when I say we're going to miss coming to this building," he said…

SLIDESHOW: Howell's Transition Continues

Clerk's office moved to new building on Friday

The scenes at the old Town Hall on Preventorium Road and the new Municipal Building on Route 9 were as different as the buildings themselves on Friday.  A year after purchasing the former Global Building the transition from the old building to the new one took another step forward as Township Clerk Penny Wollman supervised the move of her office and staff to their new home. Township Manager Helene Schlegel had already moved earlier this summer so by the time the weekend started the quiet of the empty offices seemed to almost match perfectly with the bucolic surroundings of the nearly century old building. For many township residents the building on Preventorium Road is the only Town Hall they have ever known and for many of the employees …

Clerk's Office Moving to New Building Friday

Council meeting still scheduled for old building on Tuesday

The transition from the old Town Hall on Preventorium Road to the new Municipal Complex on Route 9 will take a big step forward today as crews move the clerk's office into its new home. According to an email from Township Manager Helene Schlegel as of Friday Township Clerk Penny Wollman's staff will move to the new building located at 4567 Route 9 where Schlegel's staff moved several months ago. The Howell Fire Bureau also recently moved into the new building. Mayor Robert Walsh said he was glad to see the move being done. "I'm looking forward to everybody being under one roof," he said. After working out some of the "kinks," of moving everybody in Walsh said he believes residents will see the benefits of the move. It has been a year since…

New Municipal Building Taking Shape

Several months of work to go before move completed

As she walks through the halls of the new municipal building Township Manager Helene Schlegel can see what the finished product will look like once the work is completed and the building becomes their official home. Last week Schlegel and the administration moved into the section of the building that has been completed to directly oversee the remainder of the project. "We're getting there," she said.  Since the moving trucks brought them from Preventorium Rd. to Route 9 Schlegel said it has been business as usual as they get used to their new home. In her new office Schlegel said the building formerly known as the Global Building has a decidedly and intentionally different feel from the older Town Hall. "Besides just being here overseeing …

As Move Nears Discussions Continue for Older Buildings

Tuesday's meeting includes talk about Human Services and tax building

Township Manager Helene Schlegel said that by the end of next month she hopes to be in her new office  at the former Global Building along with the finance department.  As more pieces fit into place at the new municipal complex the question of what to do with their old homes will become even more prevalent. At Tuesday night's Council meeting the attention was turned to the Human Services and Revenue buildings on Route 524.  Schlegel said during the meeting that with the township planning to "vacate" the building that had at one time served as Town Hall, there will need to be decisions made about not only where to move the current occupants to but also what to do with the building when it is empty.  She said it was possible that groups like…

Looking Ahead Schlegel Sees Good Things For Howell

Township Manager delivers first State of the Township address

As she addressed the members of the Town Council as well as the residents attending Tuesday night's meeting, Township Manager Helene Schlegel's first State of the Township Address was guardedly optimistic after what has in many ways been a challenging year for Howell. At the first meeting of the year Schlegel looked ahead to 2012 by telling those in attendance, "I am pleased to report to you tonight that Howell Township is a vibrant and energetic community," she said. "Its people have endured the dark days of the past few years together, and together will share a bright future." Even in a town as big as Howell, Schlegel said the government has certain goals it must achieve in order to be successful. That includes maintaining the town's …

Council to Hold Reorganization Meeting Tonight

Starts at 6:30 followed by workshop meeting at 7:30

When the Howell Township Council meets tonight at Town Hall, the members sitting at the dais will be the same ones that were there at the last meeting in December.  With Councilman Juan Malave already sworn in following the resignation of former Councilwoman Susan Schroeder Clark, The members of the council should be able to get right down to business for the year ahead. There could still be changes ahead with Mayor Robert Walsh vying for a spot with the Monmouth County Freeholders.  Deputy Mayor William Gotto said barring some unforeseen circumstance he expects to hold that position for another year, though depending on Walsh's status that could change. "It's obviously a little humbling," he said of the number two spot. "Getting to do it …

After Another Emotional Meeting, Council Approves Funds for Global Purchase

Smith casts lone dissenting vote on $6.9 million ordinance

The process of a potential purchase of the Global Complex took another step forward on Tuesday night after an emotional meeting at Town Hall.  With a 4-1 vote, the council passed an ordinance allowing $6.9 million to be put toward the possible purchase of the Route 9 buildings as the future home of the municipal government. At Tuesday's meeting residents once again took advantage of their time during the public comment portion to express their feelings on leaving the nearly century old building for the newer structure right off the highway. While some in attendance came out in favor of the purchase, most were opposed. Their reasons ranged from the cost of maintaining the new building, to the lack of a plan for what would happen to the …
