Watson Strong again as Howell falls in Monmouth County Tournament
With the Howell Rebels four outs away from a trip to the Monmouth County Tournament semifinals, it appeared as if pitcher Dan Watson would carry them to victory. Watson was just one out away from completing the sixth inning when Middletown South rallied to string together two hits following a walk to put up two runs and slide past the Rebels, 3-2. Watson went 5.2 innings, giving up just five hits and two earned runs while striking out six batters and walking four more before getting tagged with the loss to the home team Eagles. Despite the loss, Watson was stellar, getting out of jams in several innings, and keeping his Howell team in the contest throughout the game. Watson allowed an un-earned run in the bottom of the second when courtesy…

Rebels can't produce offense, falling to Manalapan for second time.
MANALAPAN -- It did not take long for the Howell Rebels boys baseball team to know they were in trouble, Monday afternoon. Facing a lethal Manalapan lineup, Howell ace Dan Watson ran into trouble early, loading the bases on three walks, leading to a grand slam to put the Rebs behind the eight-ball early. The Rebels pushed across just one run, in the top of the second inning, but left several runners on base, unable to string together enough hits to bring about a rally, falling 8-1 at Manalapan High School. Watson allowed seven earned runs — a season high for him — on four hits, four walks and striking out one batter over his three innings of work. "With a team [Manalapan] like that, if you put runners on base, they're going to punish you…

The Howel Rebels varsity baseball team defeated the Southern Rams 15-8, Thursday afternoon.
It is easy to say that the Howell High School baseball team did not catch many breaks in the beginning of the year. After all, with a 2-8 start, there were lots of obstacles standing in their way. But on Thursday afternoon the Rebels showed that they are turning things around despite a late scare against the Southern Regional Rams. After building up a 9-1 lead, the home team nearly saw its advantage disappear before charging back for a decisive 15-8 victory. Senior Dan Watson started for Howell and the righty only allowed one run through his four innings of work, picking up the win. Watson struck out five and held a 9-1 lead when he was taken out. Following Watson's removal, the Howell bullpen surrendered seven runs in two innings before …

Howell tops Freehold Boro, shocks Wall to move on.
Eric Johnson stood, hands on hips, eyes glaring, but this time, there was a difference. As the second-year head coach of the Howell High School baseball team addressed his squad following a 7-1 win over Marlboro on Friday afternoon, he couldn't help but smile. "Pack a lunch for tomorrow boys," he said to the team, "because after we beat Freehold Boro, we're going to have another game to play." The confidence seemed questionable, but clearly it was true, as his 17th-seeded Rebels defeated Freehold Boro, 8-4, on Saturday morning in the first round of the Monmouth County Tournament. Howell then faced No.2 seeded Wall behind their ace, and arguably one of the best pitchers in the Shore Conference, right-hander Dan Watson, who has already …

Mark Doyle was impressive, throwing a complete game against Marlboro
The Howell High School's baseball team had enough. After losing seven of their last eight games, the Rebels (4-9) made a statement with a five-run first inning against the Marlboro Mustangs on Friday afternoon. Will Riepe drove in Joe Raccuglia, Brian Blood blasted a two-run home run, and Jesse Terranova hustled around the base-paths for the five-run first inning that essentially put the game away, as Howell toppled visting Marlboro, 7-1. "That's the game we knew we could play all year long," Rebels head coach Eric Johnson said, "It's a big win to get in that situation." Howell pitcher Mark Doyle was outstanding, tossing a complete game three hitter, and allowing just one unearned run. He struck out four batters and walked two. "I can't…

Rebels snap six-game losing skid with win over rival Brick Memorial
Not much has been going right for the Howell High School boys baseball team these days. In their Monday afternoon game against Brick Memorial, it looked to be much of the same as the Mustangs (4-4) erased a 2-0 deficit, tying the game with a solo home-run in the top of the fifth inning. In the end the Rebels hit their stride for at least one game as they bounced back for an 8-4 victory. This time, however, the Rebels had an answer of their own. In the bottom half of the fifth, Travis White lead off with a single to left, followed by Joe Raccuglia reaching base on a attempted sacrifice bunt. As Will Reipe attempted to sacrifice the runners over, the Mustangs made the throw to third base, but White beat it out, loading the bases. Senior …

Loss to Jackson Liberty drops Howell to 2-8 record
With their game against Jackson Liberty on Thursday morning, the Howell Rebel baseball team had a chance to make a statement with a non-divisional win as they look to turn their season around. And even with ace Dan Watson on the hill, the Rebels could not find the offense they needed as they fell 5-2. The game could have been much worse, especially in the home half of the first inning, as Watson gave up two walks and a single before the first out was recorded. It was then that the senior showed why he is one of the most dominant pitchers in the conference as he not only struck out the next three batters, but also retired the side in order by himself in the second inning to keep the game scoreless. Watson attributed his early struggles to…

Howell was defeated by the St. Rose Purple Roses 8-6 Saturday morning.
Things were looking good early for the Howell High School baseball team on Saturday. Although Dan Watson allowed a run for the first time this season, the Rebels held a lead after the first inning courtesy of a Jordan Reizer three run home run. The busy inning foreshadowed the rest of a high scoring game, that saw St. Rose outlast Howell in an 8-6. The pesky Roses scored a run in every inning except the sixth on Saturday. Watson lasted four innings, surrendering five runs, two of which were unearned. Without his best stuff in the cold weather, Watson battled all day striking out five. Howell dealt with injury trouble all game, replacing their starting third basemen and short stop in the same inning. Shortstop Carmine Palummo was removed …

Howell gets one hit in loss to Manalapan.
At the very least, the Howell High School baseball team was able to salvage something before Friday's game ended. It didn't take much. In fact, the ball did not even leave the infield. Carmine Palummo's infield single with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning broke up Manalapan starter Kyle Rubbinaccio's no-hit bid. Manalapan doominated Howell in an 8-0 win at Howell High School. "We weren't aggressive enough with the sticks," Howell head coach Eric Johnson said. "We didn't want to let him get ahead and he kept getting ahead hitter after hitter." The Rebels were held hitless through the first six and 1/3 innings, although Brian Blood did reach base twice, first on a walk in the first inning, and later, reaching first base on an …

Howell Rebels baseball defeates Christian Brothers Academy 10-0 after dropping two in a row.
After dropping back-to-back games and falling to 1-2, the Rebels faced the perennial power Christian Brothers Academy Colts. Instead of falling into a early season hole, Howell leaned on ace pitcher Dan Watson to pick up the much-needed win. The game was further proof that Watson is quickly establishing himself as one of the top pitchers in the conference as he cruised through a 10-0, five-inning victory. Watson was magnificent, limiting the Colts to just four hits. The righty induced nine ground ball outs, to go along with his four strikeouts. The only out recorded through the air was the final of the game. Through 13 innings this year, he has not surrendered a single run. "In his first game, the majority of the outs were strikeouts." …
