After Compromise Council Introduces 'Better' Fire Ordinance

New version came after working with fire commissioners

It was two meetings ago that members of the Howell Board of Fire Commissioners came out to express their displeasure at an ordinance that they believed would have a negative affect on their operations.  At that meeting the council voted to introduce the ordinance but delayed adopting it so they could have further discussions with the fire bureau and the commissioners. Last Tuesday night the council voted down the original ordinance and instead voted for a new one following several meetings with different groups.  Mayor Bill Gotto said along with Deputy Mayor Robert Nicastro they attended meetings with the fire commissioners and also held separate meetings to make the ordinance agreeable to everyone. Proposed Ordinance Brings Concerns From Fire Commissioners

Administration says no administrative changes coming

Several members of the Howell Township Joint Board of Fire Commissioners came out to Tuesday's meeting of the mayor and council to express their objections to an ordinance up for introduction.  The ordinance, if adopted, would "designate the local enforcing agency of the Uniform Fire Code as the Howell Township Fire Bureau which shall be maintained, operated and governed by the Township of Howell," according to the agenda item.  Township Manager Helene Schlegel said the Fire Bureau's budget would then come under the township's general budget and costs rather than the fire commissioner's as it currently stands. "It's going through some of the issues that were happening in town it appears we fund something in our budget that is not …

Southard Fire Department Plays Key Role in Serving Howell Residents

Location and specialty areas part of Route 9 house

In his two decades of service with the Southard Fire Department Chief Steve Hadgkiss has seen a lot while serving his community. From powerful fires that have taken people's lives to the department's annual rides with Santa Claus throughout their district, Hadgkiss said he is glad to be part of such a special house.  Located right in the heart of the Route 9 corridor Hadgkiss said the bumper to bumper traffic in front of their house is not as big of an obstacle as people might think. "Route 9 really for us isn't the issue at all," he said. In the Southard district, he said there are neighborhoods like Glen Arden that have dead ends or narrow streets which can present problems for their equipment. Even in the tightest jams, after all this …
