Howell Administration Shifts Personnel as Transition Continues

Township Engineer gets new title

By the beginning of next month the transition into the new Municipal Building on Route 9 will be complete with the move of personnel in the Engineering, Planning and Code Enforcement building.  As part of that shift Bill Nunziato, the Township Engineer will take over as the new Director of Land Use for the retiring Betty Lou Textor. Township Manager Helene Schlegel said the move is being done as part of a continued effort for more efficiency. "The reassignment of the Township Engineer to the position of Director of Land Use affords the township the opportunity to have a qualified individual with institutional knowledge and experience to fill a critical position within the organization, as well as to expand on the duties and …

PHOTOS: First Meeting Held in New Municipal Building

State, county and local dignitaries celebrate move to former Global Building

On Monday afternoon Township Manager Helene Schlegel and her staff were busy putting the finishing touches on the new Municipal Building so it was ready to host its first meeting on Tuesday night.  Schlegel the more than year long transition has been a "major project," but seeing the end result has been rewarding. "We're within budget and I think it looks good," she said.  At Tuesday's meeting it was Schlegel who officially welcomed the Mayor and Council and those in attendance to the new building. Mayor Robert Walsh commended the work done to get to get them into their new home. "I think you've done a tremendous job, you and your staff and all the workers of Howell Township," he said. "I walked up the stairs today and to say I was …

Going to Tonight's Meeting? Here Are Some Route 9 Alternatives

Plenty of ways to get to the new Municipal Building

Tonight at 7:30 the Howell Mayor and Council will hold its first meeting at the new Municipal Complex formerly known as the Global Building.  If driving on Route 9 is not your preferred mode of transportation there are alternatives on local roads. Here are some courtesy of Google Maps and share your own routes in the comments section.  From the North: If you are going to the meeting from the north particularly on the southbound side of Route 9 Jackson Mills Road is probably your best bet if you want to avoid the traffic.  Take that road down until you make a left onto Hyson Road. From Hyson make a right on N. New Prospect Road before turning left on Bethel Church Road. Make the third left onto Friendship Road and a right onto New …

Big events in town this week

This week figures to be a historic one here in Howell Township as the Mayor and Council will host their first meeting in the new Municipal Complex. Howell Council Closes a Chapter with Town Hall Meeting

October 16 meeting to be held at new building

When Mayor Robert Walsh gaveled Tuesday night's council meeting into adjournment he did so for what will likely be the last time at the Preventorium Road Town Hall.  The next time the council is scheduled to meet the plan is for that to be the first meeting in the new Municipal Building, formerly known as the Global Building. As they sat at the dais for the last time some members of the council looked back fondly at their time in the building while looking forward to the future.  Councilman Juan Malave said in his time on the council the building has been a special place for him and the residents of the township. "I believe that not just for me, but I speak for the rest of us when I say we're going to miss coming to this building," he said…

What Should Happen to the Old Town Hall

Tell us your opinions

Now that the offices of the township manager and township clerk have been moved to the new municipal building on Route 9 we want to know what you think should happen to the buildings they once occupied.  The Preventorium Road facility still includes the active senior citizens center but the old Town Hall, the old Howell Fire Bureau building and the former recreation building are no longer being used.  Questions have been raised during the transition to the new building about the costs associated with maintaining the old building. What would you like to see done?

You must be from Staten Island with that Idea. The buildings are in a rual sensitive area near the Manasquan reservior, Allire State Park, and you want public housing. there? How nice. First there are no sewers in that area so do you expect to run sewer lines there and destroy one of the most beautiful areas in Howell?   more ›

New Municipal Building Taking Shape

Several months of work to go before move completed

As she walks through the halls of the new municipal building Township Manager Helene Schlegel can see what the finished product will look like once the work is completed and the building becomes their official home. Last week Schlegel and the administration moved into the section of the building that has been completed to directly oversee the remainder of the project. "We're getting there," she said.  Since the moving trucks brought them from Preventorium Rd. to Route 9 Schlegel said it has been business as usual as they get used to their new home. In her new office Schlegel said the building formerly known as the Global Building has a decidedly and intentionally different feel from the older Town Hall. "Besides just being here overseeing …
