JR Smith helps lead Knicks into playoffs
During his high school basketball career JR Smith went from Millstone to Trenton and neighboring Lakewood before finally heading to Newark on his way to the NBA. On Monday it was announced that Smith was named the Sixth man of the year as the top reserve in the league. Coming off the bench for the New York Knicks Smith averaged just over 18 points per game and scored at least 20 points in 29 of his 80 games this year. In a story on ESPN.com Smith said he was honored by the recognition. "I just wanted to show everybody that I could be a team guy and it's all about the team," he said. Community event from 11-1
The Howell PAL will be hosting a special event on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Sgt. Chris Hill of the Howell Police Department is inviting people to come to the old Southard School to take part. Sgt. Hill said the day will include bounce houses for the children, door prizes and free food. For anyone interested Hill said there will also be volunteers at the event to watch the children if parents want to go shopping during the two hours.

Designed for parents and children
Sgt. Chris Hill of the Howell Police Department and the President of the National and local Police Athletic League has said one of the goals of the PAL is to provide a safe place for the young residents of the town to come and play and take part in the various activities offered. On Wednesday night the PAL will be hosting a special program helping to teach them and others ways to deal with "tough situations," Hill said. The program will touch on a variety of topics according to Hill, "whether it's friendships gone bad or grades or just a poor relationship with friends and family. The event starts at 6 p.m. and is scheduled to run until 8 p.m. There will also be food and drink available during the night.
