Some 1,700 people -- family, friends, policemen and policewomen -- arrive at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial by bike to join thousands of others honoring fallen officers in Washington, D.C.
Led by a caravan of motorcycle cops, an estimated 1,700 people arrived at the national police memorial on their bikes Sunday, part of a week-long series of events to honor more than 19,000 officers lost in the line of duty. Included among the riders was a contingent of officers from the Howell Police Department. The local group had its largest turnout this year according to the department's Facebook page. Sgt. Joseph Markulic, Sgt. Mike Martin as well as Ptl. Riaz Motani and Det. Rob Ortenzi once again took part in the trip down to Washington. They were joined this year by Cpl. The Freehold resident is accused of putting a Nanny Cam in his office restroom.
A Howell Dentist was arrested on Wednesday after an investigation revealed a "Nanny Cam" had been set up in his patient restroom. Detective Sgt. Eileen Dodd announced on Friday night that Dr. Scott M. Meltzer, 49, of Freehold faces five counts of invasion of privacy. According to Dodd the camera, which is believed to have been installed on April 4, was motion activated and "aimed toward the toilet and may have recorded any person that used the restroom." The practice is located in the Candlewood Commons. Dodd said so far five victims have been identified leading to the five charges. Search of home on Danella Way leads to charges
In the early morning hours on Thursday the Howell Police Department searched a home on Danella Way which resulted in the discovery of a "full-scale marijuana grow facility," According to Detective Sgt. Eileen Dodd. The home was unoccupied at the time of the search according to Dodd. During the search 32 mature marijuana plants were found and were all at least six feet tall. Calling it a "very elaborate system," Dodd said officers found "fluorescent lights, heat, fans and an irrigation and drainage system." She said the room was also insulated and there were blowers to vent the room. Howell resident taken to hospital with "severe trauma"
UPDATE: THURSDAY 4:20p.m.- Howell resident Brooke Papiomitis was listed in critical condition following a crash on Route 33 Wednesday Morning. Detective Sgt. Eileen Dodd said 19-year-old Papiomitis was reportedly in a coma and suffering from "serious head injuries" as of Thursday afternoon. Driver reportedly not wearing seatbelt
A crash on Fort Plains Road left an 18-year-old Freehold resident with minor injuries to her leg and shoulder after she was reportedly not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash. Detective Sgt. Eileen Dodd of the Howell Police Department reported that at around 9:20 on Friday morning Elaina Malfa was driving south on Fort Plains Road when she crossed the center lane while coming around a bend. At that time she struck a 2013 Ford Escape which was being driven by 47-year-old Ellen Caruso-Garland of Jackson. Minor injuries reported
A 17-year-old Lakewood resident reportedly caused an accident on Route 9 after pulling out of the Friendship Mall parking lot late Wednesday night. Sgt. Thomas Weg reported that at 10:40 on Wednesday 26-year-old Howell resident Erica Sandomierski was driving in the right lane of Route 9 South when her car was struck by the teen. Weg said the Lakewood driver reported they did not see Sandomierski's car when they pulled out of the lot. Weg also said the Howell resident had tried to take "evasive action," but was "unsuccessful." The force of the crash caused Sandomierski's car to roll before coming to a rest on its roof in the left lane. She was taken to Kimball Medical Center for evaluation and treatment according to Weg. Faced similar charges from other incidents
A township resident was arrested earlier this month after the Howell Police Department received reports of a man walking naked in the Manasquan Reservoir Parking Lot. Detective Sgt. Eileen Dodd said when Ptl. Richard Robertiello and Ryan Richards responded to the scene they found 66-year-old Raymond Haller standing naked next to his car. At just before 6 p.m. on March 11 Dodd said the park was open and there were "a large number of visitors," in the area on what she described as a warm day. Haller was charged with lewdness and issued a summons. Dodd said he has been arrested for similar incidents. 17-year-old driver cited
An accident at the intersection of Manassa Road and Old Tavern Road resulted in two people being sent to local hospitals and a young driver being cited for making an improper turn. According Detective Sgt. Eileen Dodd A 17-year-old driver attempted to make a left turn at the intersection which resulted in a crash with 56-year-old Howell resident Choon Y Yim. Also in the car with the teenager was 18-year-old Nick Carrelli who reported a minor head and neck injury. He was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center by the Ramtown First Aid Squad. Officer lauded for leadership at council meeting
At Tuesday night's meeting of the Mayor and Council Tom Rizzo was officially sworn in as the newest lieutenant with the Howell Township Police Department. He may not have started his career with the Howell Force, but Chief Ronald Carter said after they "snatched," Lt. Rizzo away from the Middlesex Borough department he has "been nothing but an asset to the department ever since." In his time working in Howell Rizzo has worked in the detective bureau and was promoted to sergeant in 2007 before moving up to his current rank. Chief Carter said having worked with Rizzo for nine years he as "proven to be an up and coming star." Farmingdale resident injured
A crash on Yellowbrook Road on Saturday night sent a Farmingdale resident to a local hospital and resulted in a Howell resident facing a variety of charges. Sgt. Mike Martin reported that at around 7:45 p.m. 40-year-old Wilbur Briggs was driving a 1999 Dodge Durango north on Yellowbrook Road when he crossed into the other lane of traffic. At that time he struck a 2002 Dodge Durango being driven by 44-year-old Richard Hernandez of Farmingdale. Following the crash witnesses reported seeing Briggs run to his house near the scene of the accident.
