Man Dies in Howell Fire

Home is located in Oak Hill Trailer Park.

A Howell man whom neighbors described as "in his 40s" died Sunday morning after a fire at the Oak Hill Trailer Park, according to the park's manager. Manager Keith Lackey could not immediately confirm the identity of the man, but said that officials told him a man in the home - located on the corners of Man O' War Lane and Seattle Slew Drive - died of smoke inhalation.  Neighbors described the occupant of the residence as "quiet" and "always out with his dog." It was not immediately clear whether the dog was in the home at the fire.  Police said they received a call for fire and smoke conditions around 10:30 a.m. and by the time a Patch reporter arrived at 10:50 a.m., the fire had been extinguished. Officials from the Monmouth County …

Owners Look to Fresh 'Chapter' at Local Establishment

Also owns Ivy League

When he agreed to buy The Chapter House last year Tom Jaspan knew owning two restaurants in town would present its own set of challenges. He had no way of knowing that one of those challenges would be Hurricane Sandy which closed the Route 9 north restaurant for a few days and his original Route 9 south Ivy League for more than a week.  After cleaning up from the powerful storm Jaspan said his time has been spent fixing up the restaurant. He said he hopes to make it a place to enjoy for customers who have frequented there for more than two decades as well as attracting new customers. The two restaurants were originally opened by longtime business owner and former Chamber of Commerce President Cory Wingerter. Before buying The Chapter House…

Lakewood Teen Cited in Wednesday Night Crash

Minor injuries reported

A 17-year-old Lakewood resident reportedly caused an accident on Route 9 after pulling out of the Friendship Mall parking lot late Wednesday night.  Sgt. Thomas Weg reported that at 10:40 on Wednesday 26-year-old Howell resident Erica Sandomierski was driving in the right lane of Route 9 South when her car was struck by the teen. Weg said the Lakewood driver reported they did not see Sandomierski's car when they pulled out of the lot.  Weg also said the Howell resident had tried to take "evasive action," but was "unsuccessful." The force of the crash caused Sandomierski's car to roll before coming to a rest on its roof in the left lane. She was taken to Kimball Medical Center for evaluation and treatment according to Weg. The Lakewood …

Council, Chamber Tout New Era of Cooperation

Business community looks to work with governing body for growth

At the last meeting of the Howell Township Council there was a sense of cooperation when members of the Howell Chamber of Commerce addressed the members on the dais.  Jim Godfrey, who serves as 1st Vice President of the chamber thanked the council for working to help local businesses in the township. Godfrey said he has seen the two groups work well together in recent years and was hopeful that trend would continue. "I think we all realize the burden of the residential taxpayer cannot continue to be sustained without a strong, smart business community," he said.  Identifying what he saw as a "shift change," in the attitude of the administration, Godfrey said he has been glad to see the council working to help the business community. That …

Thanks for the anonminity suggestion George, but everyone knows that unless you are in the councils pocket you don't use your name. Some of us do have to live here and don't want things made harder for us because we speak up. But here's a suggestion for you. How many businesses are there in Howell? Birdsall's Legal Issues Not Expected to Affect Howell Operations

Administration cites in-house staff and other options

While current and past executives of Birdsall Services Group face indictments on a variety of charges the administration of Howell Township said they have confidence in the current members of that company and the township in handling the day-to-day engineering needs of the township.  Township Manager Helene Schlegel said in addition to the services provided by Birdsall there is an in house staff and other engineering companies the township has contracts available for their services. PAL Program Continues to Grow in New Home

Old Southard School heavily used

It has been a year and a half since the Howell PAL moved into their new home in the old Southard School and Sgt. Chris Hill of the Howell Police Department said it has been a time of exceeding expectations. Since moving to the one central location Hill said they have not only been able to offer previously popular programs but also added new ones that have also brought people to the once empty building. "We're doing a lot of stuff with the kids," he said. "It revolves around the community and giving the kids something to do so we don't have to chase them around." One of the biggest additions, according to Hill has been the preschool which was open to toddlers in the community at first but has recently expanded to include infants as well. …

Stop the insanity

Jaded, Some people become professionally offensive. For a price, they offer to hurl insults at people for no good reason or truth. Thankfully, most do not take hurting others to that extreme, but each of us will fail someone someday. In that moment, you need to examine yourself and ask why you said or did something that you knew would be hurtful. Once you've honestly answered that question, you …   more ›
