UPDATE: Monday Zoning Board Meeting Cancelled

Route 9 hotel application was on the agenda

UPDATE: The zoning board meeting scheduled for Monday was cancelled due to inclement weather. With up to five inches of snow possible for the township the board cancelled the meeting on Monday afternoon with no word on when it will be rescheduled.  Original Report: An application in front of the zoning board to build a hotel at the intersection of Route 9 North and Northwoods Place is expected to continue tonight at the new Municipal building at 7:30 p.m. The hearing is the second for the current application though there have been several proposals for the site over more than two decades. Perhaps the only time you have traveled Southbound is during the evening rush. Traffic is there from 10:30 AM until about 7:00 PM. The heaviest is from about 3:30-6:30. Keep in mind that the plans call for a Conference center that could house up to two weddings or gatherings simultaneously so your theory of people not leaving en masse isn't exactly correct. Regarding changing the zoning - this …   more ›

Zoning Board Reorganization Brings Many Familiar Faces

Hotel application looming for later this month

The Howell Zoning Board of Adjustment held its annual reorganization meeting this week and for the second year Stephen Meier was chosen as the board's chairman.  Meier said after 15 years he has chaired numerous meetings in a variety of capacities so another year at the helm of the dais is something he looks forward to. Last year the board went through many changes as Meier moved up to the chairmanship, but he said he expects this year to run smoothly. "Everybody's going to be more comfortable with it," he said.  The chairman also said he expects the board to continue along the same path it began last year. "We're trying to take the board in a different direction than its been. More of a pure land use and holding more strictly to the …

T-Mobile Closing Arguments Set For Next Meeting

Hearing nears end with final witnesses

After more than a year of meetings an application to build a 120 foot monopole cell tower Christ Church Property on Oak Glen Rd. took another step closer to completion. At Monday's meeting of the Howell Board of Adjustment the cell phone company brought back a prior witness and objectors to the plan were given a chance to voice their opinion before closing arguments are slated to be delivered later this summer.  Board Chairman Stephen Meier who had recused himself from prior meetings on the application filled in for Vice Chairman Valeri Morone who had handled the hearings in recent months. Morone had a medical issue which prevented her from attending Monday's meeting. During the three hours of testimony and cross examination by both sides …

Manalapan Officer Gets Zoning Board Approval for New Fence

Police K-9 to be housed on officer's property.

The Howell Township Zoning Board of Adjustment held a brief meeting on Monday evening where one resident was given permission to alter a fence surrounding his home. Robert Herring, owner of the property, came before the board seeking to put a new six foot fence on his property to replace an existing one and pushing it out into a 25 foot setback. Herring, a patrolman in Manalapan, explained to the board the reason he was looking for a variance was because he was hoping to use his backyard to house a K-9 that could possibly serve the Manalapan Police Department. “The six foot fence would be a much better solution to house a police canine,” Ptl. Herring noted. He explained that he wanted for the higher fence for privacy and also so the dog …

Zoning Board Denies West Farms Rd. Application

Multi-family proposal deemed too large

At Monday's Zoning Board of Adjustment meeting the members on the dais heard an application for a residence on West Farms Rd.  The proposed project was for a two story building with five age restricted units on the roughly two acre parcel of land. During testimony there were questions about how the property would be maintained and who would be living in the buildings, but in the end the size of the project became the main factor in the board denying the use variance.  The attorney for the applicant argued in his closing statements that the proposed project was more beneficial to the local area than a larger home built on the property. "You have to look at this as just this particular site and would this fit," he said. "It's a good use, it'…
