Library Hosting Standardized Testing Discussion

Local educators to take part

Tuesday night at the Howell Public Library a spirited discussion is set to be held about the new state standards and standardized testing.  Branch Manager Diane Rieth said the event will cover a variety of topics including "the historical perspective on standards and testing, how to prepared New Jersey students are for college, and different opinions on how we should move forward." Among the scheduled panelists are Howell Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum Joseph Isola and Freehold Regional High School District Director of Curriculum Jeffrey Moore. Shawnda Floyd, the English department chairperson at Brookdale Community College is also scheduled to attend. They will be joined by Daphne Pappas Hobson, the Chief Executive Officer of …

Library to Host Longtime Howell Resident and Author

Lud Gutman will talk about the township's history and his book

Earlier this year Dr. Lud Gutmann came back to his hometown to talk about his new book Richard Road: Journey from Hate.  On Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Gutmann, who is on the faculty at West Virginia University, will be at the Howell Library to talk about growing up in the town and how it has changed since then.  Gutmann's book discusses a variety of topics including growing up in a family that escaped the Nazis in Europe and raised chickens here in town. From Howell he was the first student from Freehold High School to attend Princeton University before working his way to Morgantown where he works on the faculty of the in the neurology department. The event is sponsored by the Howell Historical Society and the Friends of the Howell Library.

Senator's Staff Coming to Howell Today

Residents invited to meet them at the library

Representatives from Sen. Frank Lautenberg's office will be coming to the Howell Library today to help with constituent services.  The staff has been making stops all over the state to help with federal issues including "Social Security, Medicare, federal taxes, immigration and veterans services," according to his office.  The representatives will be at the library from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Helping Local Food Pantry Goes Online

New website helps stock pantry

All through the year residents from around town look to the Howell Food Pantry to help them put food on the table. Now, thanks to a website helping that organization is easier than ever. A national group of Podiatrists including locally at Affiliated Foot and Ankle Care has started a website through their own organization. Known as De-Feet Childhood Hunger (DFCH) the group has started a website which take make contributions to the Howell food pantry. In a press release from DFCH the idea behind the site is to provide "a simple opportunity to donate food to the Howell Food Pantry during the summer months when donations are low and shelves at the Howell Food Pantry become bare." Still Time to Donate to County Food Drive

With less than a week to go in the month of April the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders is continuing a food drive that has collected more than five tons of items for the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. The drive is being held in April which is also National County Government Month. This year's theme is "Healthy Counties, Healthy Families." Freeholder Deputy Director John P. Curley said the drive has been a rousing success so far. "We are so pleased with the generosity our residents have shown during this food drive," he said. "People who need food are not those who we traditionally think of as the poor. Today most people in need of assistance are formerly working, middle class families who lost their job or are …
