Howell Middle Schools Receive Mixed Grades In New Reports

Memorial, North And South middle schools graded in new state report cards

The three Howell Township middle schools received a mixed bag of results in the first round of a new statewide school evaluation system. The state Department of Education NJ Schools Performance Report was released for each of the schools across the state last week. The evaluation scores middle schools in three major categories: Academic Achievement, College & Career Readiness and Student Growth. Academic Achievement scores are tabulated from the results of students’ performance in language and mathematics standardized tests. College & Career Readiness scores are calculated in middle schools by measuring how many students are enrolled in Algebra I in either 7th or 8th grade as well as how many pupils are chronically absent. HMSS Students Look to 'Silence The Violence'

Project aims to support victims of CT shooting

Following the school shooting in Newtown, CT people around the country have come up with unique ways to show their support for the victims and survivors of the tragedy. At Middle School South a class of seventh graders came up with a project to work with their fellow students to put down violent video games for a week in a show of solidarity with the Connecticut students. Calling the project "Silence the Violence," was inspired by a student from the affected district who started a drive to collect and destroy violent video games donated by his fellow students. Five students, Katie Klein, Aparna Ragupathi, Riley McGowan, Jayne McDevitt and Charlotte Paley gave a series of presentations asking not to destroy the games but just to take a …

Middle School South Student Qualifies for National GeoBee State Competition

One of the 100 students to qualify statewide

Dina M. Brown, a seventh grader at Middle School South has been qualified to represent not only her school but the district in the state level of the National Geographic Bee this month. Getting to the National GeoBee is no easy feat. Students first competed at the school level against their classmates, answering questions like, "Which of the following cities has the least average annual rainfall? Sydney, Belize City or Kabul?" Then the local champions had to take a standardized test to qualify for the state competition. Only the top 100 scores were accepted. The Wiz Comes to Middle School South

Two more performances set for Saturday

After two electrifying performances, there are still two more chances to see students at Middle School South put on a rendition of the popular musical, The Wiz.  In the Middle School South edition, the role of Dorothy is being played by eighth grader Stephanie Hanvey. Along her journey through Oz, she meets Addapearle, the Good Witch of the North in the story played by seventh grader Devin McGowan. She will also meet Glinda, the Good Witch of the South, played by eighth grader Kristen Rutigliano. Also helping her through the strange land is the Scarecrow, being played by seventh grader Paul Ternosky, the Tin Man played by fellow seventh grader Jordan Mitchell and eighth grader Nick Scala playing the role of the cowardly lion.  Vincent …
