Township lights to dim on Wednesday
Following last week's Shooting in Newtown, CT the Howell Administration announced that they will be honoring the victims and are asking residents and neighboring towns to do the same. From Wednesday night until Thursday night all the holiday lights in town will be turned off. In an announcement on the township's website the administration said the gesture is being made, "In support and unity and to show the residents of the community of Newtown, Connecticut that they are not alone in the darkness that they must endure this holiday season." Township residents are also being asked to turn their lights off that night in a sign of support and Township Manager Helene Schlegel said she will be reaching out to other towns to take part as well. Board president and Superintendent issue statement
Following Friday's shooting in Newtown, CT. Superintendent Enid Golden and Board President Tim O'Brien issued a joint statement in response to the tragic event. "We are all so deeply saddened by the shootings that have taken place in Newtown, Connecticut," the statement said. They added, "The safety and security of your children while at school is always our top priority, and we have a plan in place at each of our schools to prevent crisis situations." That plan includes working with the Howell Police Department and the local fire departments discussing safety procedures with students and staff and holding emergency preparation drills. WEST DEPTFORD, NJ -- Mary Sherlach looked forward to spending more time on Owasco Lake during her retirement. She and her husband, Bill, owned a cabin along the Finger Lakes in upstate New York. Mary Sherlach was one year away from retirement. But on Friday morning, her life ended in the second most deadly school shooting in American history. Sherlach, 56, was school psychologist at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, where a gunman opened fire, killing 26 people, including 20 children. The gunman, identified as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, also killed his mother, who was a teacher at the school, according to reports. He died in the rampage at the school, bringing the death toll to 28.
