Pop Warner and American Youth Football working on deal to share football fields
They are two among the many lessons we all learned in kindergarten: Play nice with others. And share. That’s what the township’s two major football and cheer organizations are trying to relearn as the leaders of Howell Pop Warner and American Youth Football are working out a deal to share the Old Tavern Road football fields between the two clubs for the upcoming season and beyond. The Howell Lions Pop Warner organization previously had an exclusive lease with the township to use the township-owned fields in exchange for upkeep, Mayor William Gotto said. Prize could include money for local Pop Warner league
For more than a decade Courtney Kalafsky has been part of the Howell Pop Warner program starting as a flag football cheerleader in 2000 and working her way up. Now, as she prepares to graduate from Howell High School Kalafsky is a semi-finalist for a scholarship that could help her and benefit the league that she has spent so much time supporting. In order to do that, she needs help from the community to win the prize. During her time with Pop Warner the team won two national championships and Kalafsky was named as a 2nd Team All-American Scholar four times in nine years. Council honors national championship squads
At Tuesday's meeting of the Howell Mayor and Council several groups of young residents were honored for their accomplishments during the recent football season. The Howell Pop Warner Junior Pee Wee Large team won the 2012 Level 2 Cheer Team National Championship while the Howell Pop Warner Junior Midget Cheer Medium team took second place in the 2012 Level 2 Cheer Team National Championships. The Howell Rebels Division 8 Cheer Team brought home the national title in the 2012 Division 8 Small American Youth Cheer Championships and the Howell Rebels Pee Wee Blue team won the 2012 American Youth Football pee Wee Division 2 National Championship.

Football and cheerleading leave their marks in Florida
For a group of young Howell cheerleaders a trip to Florida earlier this month was the culmination of a season's worth of hard work that sometimes included working in freezing cold gyms in the wake of a powerful storm. For a local football team, their trip was the culmination of years of near misses before finally reaching their goal. By the time the trips were done Howell had two national champions and a national runner-up after a very busy fall season. Tom Bonham, the coach of the Howell Division II Pee Wee squad said their goal was to make it to Florida from the start of their American Youth Football season. "We used it as motivation in practice that we had to get better each day to achieve it and the team kept responding," he said. …
