With the Vatican set to begin the process of electing a new Pope today, millions of eyes will be looking for white smoke rising from the Sistine Chapel, signifying that two-thirds, or 77 of the 115 Cardinals eligible to vote, have agreed on the man to succeed Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. When he heard the announcement that Pope Benedict XVI intends to resign at the end of the month Father Vincent Euk of St. Veronica's said he was not surprised by the decision. Euk said he had seen an interview with the Pope where he said he would not resign from the office in a time of trouble but rather when he physically could not carry on the duties. That interview proved to be correct with Pope Benedict citing those very reasons for being the first pope in centuries to step down. Father Euk also said he was also impressed by how Pope Benedict went about his resignation. "What I find kind of interesting is his humility in recognizing he can't go on," he said.
