An area mom has come up with a different way to help families still affected by Hurricane Sandy.
A former Howell resident has Facebook to thank for her out-of-the-box fundraiser to benefit families affected by Hurricane Sandy. Maureen Spataro, a Freehold mom who recently moved to Howell, was casually checking her Facebook when a friend from Brooklyn messaged her. The message asked Spataro to send any old dresses, specifically prom dresses, to her alma mater high school. The dresses would be available for students affected by Hurricane Sandy to shop through and would help offset the high prices of prom attire. “I know how big of a deal prom is for high school students,” said Spataro. “When my daughter went to prom two years ago I was amazed at how expensive things were and that was before Hurricane Sandy. Please join Cinderella's Closet of Monmouth County as we host our 6th Annual Prom Fashion Show at the Ocean Place Resort in Long Branch on Feb. 22. Tickets are $30 in advance and $40 at the door. What a fantastic way to come together and benefit those in need. Guests will be treated to a light buffet dinner, wonderful entertainment, and a Prom Fashion Show featuring upcoming 2013 prom fashions provided by Whisper's Fashions and Men's Wearhouse. Chips Salon will do hair and makeup for our models. Our event will also host local area high school students as they present their own original prom fashions for the runway. Dress drive to be held through next month
One of the most exciting times of the year for high school students is prom season. The time getting ready for that big night can also be very expensive so the Howell PAL wants to make sure that students getting dressed up for the dance can do so in an affordable way. From now until March 15 the PAL is asking people to donate prom dresses or tuxedoes that the younger residents can use. They can either be brought to the PAL offices in the old Southard School located at 115 Kent Rd. or Howell High School students can bring the items right to Michelle Vitale.
