Cigarette believed responsible

The Moon Motel on Route 9 is now closed after a fire early Saturday morning that forced all residents to be moved to another location. Detective Sgt. Kelly told responding officers he had been smoking a cigarette when he took his child to the bathroom. When they came back he said the bed was on fire before the flames spread to the ceiling area.  The fire, Dodd said, caused "significant damage" to the motel. All districts seem to be keeping with minimal increases except for Ramtown District #4. According to the 2 articles in 2012 they asked for $907,693 and this year they are asking for $1,584,267. That's an increase of $676,574. Am I reading this correctly? What is the story on this? What are their capital expenses? I know it's only a tax increase of $70,246 to taxpayers, just wondering what the …   more ›

Hurricane Sandy

Ramtown Fire Department Donates Truck to Union Beach

Utility truck to help community in need

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy communities like Union Beach lost not only house but also vital emergency equipment.  When the local Ramtown Fire Department was deciding what to do with an old utility truck it was decided they would donate the vehicle to the first responders in shore community. Fire Commissioner Greg Scarlato, who represents the Ramtown house, said it was an easy decision. "We were looking for a way to clean it off and get rid of it," he said. "We went to the county fire marshal's office and they said after the storm the fire company can use it." The Union Beach department had lost a similar truck in the storm so Scarlato said it was a perfect fit. "They were very excited about it," he said. "They do a lot more fire police …
