Deputy Mayor Gotto's Office Hours Get Tax Message to Residents

Two sessions held this week

For residents who were unhappy with their recent tax bills a meeting last week was a chance for them to ask members of the council what caused some of their bills to spike as much as 30 percent or more.  Deputy Mayor William Gotto was unable to attend that meeting because of an illness but said it was important for him to talk with residents about their concerns. On Wednesday afternoon and Thursday night Gotto held office hours at Town Hall.  The Message: He said he hoped it would help the people he met with to understand what happened to lead to such drastic increases. "You've got to be able to tell the story of what happened and show that there have been things we're doing that made a difference," he said. "Right now nobody wants to hear…

Deputy Mayor to Host Office Hours This Week

Missed Meeting Due to Illness

After missing last week's council meeting due to an illness Deputy Mayor William Gotto will meet with residents this week to discuss their new tax rates.  Gotto will be at Town Hall on Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Depending on how many people turn out for the meetings they will either be held in the Mayor's office near the council chambers or in the chamber itself.  The meeting, he hopes will be a chance to interact with residents of Howell who were unhappy with the increase in their taxes. The unhappiness was magnified for many residents who also saw their homes lose value in a recent reassessment. Administration Responds to Tax Bill Questions

Council set to meet tonight at 7:30

In the first email from the Mayor and Council several of the issues affecting the tax rates for residents were addressed as well as steps taken to tackle those issues. "The Governing Body after much thought, studying our budget thoroughly and public hearings and input made these decisions," it said of the budget process. The email continued, "We have taken all measures to tighten our belts and …

Concerned Howell Resident

I have to agree with Dave Deering when he said our business manager is making $150,000 per year....that's probably not including the personal vehicle we provide and the gas and insurance as well. Times that by other members of town hall, etc that have the same luxuries we pay for. What about the school Principals who make 6 figures and the teachers we pay for to go back to school for their …   more ›

Council Gets Update on Reassessment Efforts

No word yet on tax rate for 2012

Over the past few weeks residents of Howell have received letters in regards to the township's recent reassessment efforts.  At the Town Council meeting on Tuesday night the Township's tax assessor and a representative from the company that conducted the reassessment gave an update on the progress of their efforts.  While residents may not have been happy with the updated value of the property Mayor Robert Walsh said even before they began their presentation that there was still no firm decision on the tax rate for the upcoming year. "Until we have what the budgets are from the schools, from the county, from the fire districts ther is no possible way to have a tax rate at this time," he said.  Neil Rubenstein from Realty Appraisals Co. …
