Monmouth County Fire Academy graduates two new classes
The Monmouth County Fire Academy graduated several new members into the Howell ranks along with 57 other firefighters from Monmouth, Mercer, and Ocean counties. Michael Bardsley and Ryder Grimes will join the Ramtown house following his graduation while Justin Boucher and Justin Scullion will join the Squankum house. Joining the ranks fo the Adelphia house are Daniel Andrus, John DePinto, Frank Ferrara and Alexander Kubiak while David Lovey is set to join the Southard department. Freewood Acres will also have a new member following Michael Schubert's graduation. Elections for Fire Commissioners also on the ballot
The five fire districts throughout Howell will have their annual elections tomorrow when residents will have the chance to elect their respective members of the Board of Chosen Fire Commissioners and vote on their annual budgets. For residents in Fire District #1, also known as the Squankum Fire District the annual budget proposed for election totals $1,125,544 of which $1,030,744 will be raised by taxation. According to information on the township's website $185 thousand is for "non bondable equipment and $190 thousand is for Capital Appropriations. This is expected to lessen the tax rate from last year according to Commissioner Tom Matthews. Fire District #2, also known as the Adelphia Fire Company has proposed a budget of $1,634,400 …

Money to help with staffing for two years
The Squankum Fire Department will receive $450,000 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) thanks to a grant which will help provide members for a two-year period. According to a press release from Sen. Frank Lautenberg's office, the money is coming as part of the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Program. "New Jersey's first responders risk their lives to keep our communities safe, and this federal funding will help ensure that Howell Fire District No. 1 is adequately staffed and even better prepared for emergency situations," Lautenberg stated in the release. Blaze took several hours to put out
Firefighters from around Howell worked with assistance from Jackson and Freehold to fight a fire that claimed the lives of several animals on Kent Road Friday night. The Howell Police Department received a report of the fire from a passing motorist and that the house was "heavily engulfed in flames," when they arrived. After "several hours," of battling the fire it was determined that the homeowner was not home at the time but that "several cats and a dog are believed to have died as a result of the fire." The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Howell Police Department and the Howell Fire Bureau. The house "was a complete loss as a result of the fire," the police department reported. Before he makes his big trip on Christmas Eve Santa will be coming to Howell with the help of the local fire departments over the next two weekends. Santa will be riding through the Squankum section of town starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday and will also be riding through Adelphia section starting at 11 a.m. The Southard Fire Department will be hosting a pancake breakfast with Santa on Dec. 16 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Breakfast will run until noon and local children will get the chance to ride on one of the department's trucks from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For $6 for adults and $4 people who come to meet Santa will also enjoy eggs, pancakes, sausage and beverages. Taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center
The Howell Police Department responded to the scene of a one car crash on Tuesday night when a Lakewood resident drove off Old Tavern Road and struck a tree. Sgt. Joseph Markulic said 39-year-old Hector Rodriguez was driving east in a 1994 van when he drove off the road a the "S" curve and struck a tree on the passenger side of his car. From there he hit another tree head on trapping himself in the van. Markulic said Rodriguez was extricated by members of the Squankum Fire Department and taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center by the Ramtown First Aid Squad and paramedics from MONOC. As of Tuesday night Rodriguez was listed in critical but stable condition. The investigation is ongoing and summonses against Rodriguez are still …

Frosted windshield a factor in accident
Two people were taken to area hospitals following a crash Friday morning near the intersection of Route 524A and Daybreak Court. Detective Sgt. Eileen Dodd of the Howell Police Department reported that around 7:20 in the morning 51-year-old Howell resident Victor Benis was driving north on Route 524A in his 1999 Honda Civic. At the same time 19-year-old Howell resident Alex Smith was attempting to make a left when he struck Benis' car. The collision caused "heavy damage" to Benis' car according to Dodd particularly to the front door and fender on the drivers side. Benis was removed from the car by the Squankum Fire Department and was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center by the Howell Police EMS and MONOC paramedics. Dodd said …

Accident occurred on Squankum Yellowbrook Road
Power was knocked out for several hours for residents near Squankum Yellowbrook Road when a car went off the road and knocked down three utility poles in the area. Ptl. Scott Brooks of the Howell Police Department reported that just before 7:30 Saturday morning 48-year-old James Malcolm of Brick was driving south on the roadway. Brooks said he looked down and away from the roadway and his car went off the road near the Howell Board of Education building. Driving a 2001 Honda Odyssey, Brooks said Malcolm struck the poles and overturned onto its passenger side doors. With help from the nearby Squankum Fire Department Brooks said he was able to get out of the car suffering only a minor hand injury. Malcolm was taken to Jersey Shore …

Several local departments respond to blaze
A fire was reported on Roosevelt Avenue at 3:40 on Wednesday afternoon that brought most of the local fire departments out in response. Detective Sgt. Eileen Dodd of the Howell Police Department said the fire was reported by neighbors and flames could be seen when officers arrived on scene. Dodd said the house had been vacant for close to six months and there were no injuries reported at the scene. Freewood Acres was the closest fire department to respond. They were joined by representatives from the Adelphia, Southard, Squankum and Jackson Fire Departments. The Howell Fire Bureau and Monmouth County Fire Marshalls office also repsonded to the scene as did the Howell First Aid, Farmingdale Howell First Aid and Ramtown First Aid Squads. …

Remains found near Lake Enno
A dive team from the Squankum Fire Department was one of several local first responder groups to help with a search in Jackson on Friday morning. According to a press release from the Jackson Police Department the search began at 10 a.m. this morning for a male off of Bennetts Mills Rd. On Thursday night the man's car was located in the area and an initial search was suspended close to midnight because of darkness and "heavy foliage," the release said. This morning the remains of the man were found in the river, 100 yards away from the Lake Enno Spillway.
