Low turnout in some districts, higher in others
There are five districts in Howell and each was open on Saturday for the annual fire district elections. For the Southard Fire House it was an eventful few hours and the final results were not known until Monday morning. Southard was more the exception than the rule as others like the Squankum house saw less than two dozen residents come in and cast their votes. There were six candidates for two seats on the Board of Chosen Fire Commissioners running from the Southard house. According to results provided by board clerk Frank Puccio the two winners were Doug Hesselbarth with 194 votes and Francis W. Pawlowski with 182 votes. Elections for Fire Commissioners also on the ballot
The five fire districts throughout Howell will have their annual elections tomorrow when residents will have the chance to elect their respective members of the Board of Chosen Fire Commissioners and vote on their annual budgets. For residents in Fire District #1, also known as the Squankum Fire District the annual budget proposed for election totals $1,125,544 of which $1,030,744 will be raised by taxation. According to information on the township's website $185 thousand is for "non bondable equipment and $190 thousand is for Capital Appropriations. Districts around town to hold elections
The five Howell fire districts will be holding their annual elections on Saturday at their houses around town. The elections will determine whether their budgets are approved as well as holding elections to the board of fire commissioners. At least one district will also have a question on the ballot looking to approve future funding for new equipment. Fire District #1, also known as the Squankum Fire Department has two three-year terms up for election with three candidates running. Union Beach does not have a fire district nor does it have commissioners, the title Fire Commissioner is for an elected official to said district, there are no volunteer commissioners. Their budget is only 125,000 because that is all the town gives them.
