For high school wrestlers in New Jersey the ultimate individual goal is always to make it to Boardwalk Hall for the state championship tournament.  The Wrestlers Many of the same wrestlers that have finished their careers on the podium in Atlantic City have gone on to make a name for themselves at the college level. On Sunday some of the most decorated athletes in Garden State history found themselves in a place they never expected to compete as they took part in the Grapple at the Garden at Madison Square Garden.  In its illustrious history of hosting some of the biggest sporting events ever Sunday was the first time collegiate wrestling was held at the place known as the World's Most Famous Arena. A look at Saturday’s Shore Conference football games, compiled from reports at app.com, nj.com and allshoremedia.net: Freehold Township 35, Howell 7: Shane McGhee ran for two touchdowns and the visiting Patriots (1-5) tallied nearly 250 yards on the ground as they beat the Rebels (0-6) in a game postponed from Friday night. Dan Bloodgood, Hayden Shapiro and Matt Pine all ran for scores for Freehold Township. Dave Jimerson scored from a yard out for Howell. A look at Saturday’s Shore Conference football games, compiled from app.com, nj.com and allshoremedia.net: Long Branch 30, Freehold 14: Deion Williams scored from 4 yards out and Myson Pennington caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Avery Griffin, and Vicente Mota kicked a 27-yard field goal as the visiting Green Wave (5-1) topped the Colonials (1-4). Griffin also rushed for a 5-yard touchdown for Long Branch, which also got a touchdown from Joscil Jackson on a 33-yard interception return. Josh Dixon scored touchdowns of 75 and 36 yards for Freehold. This year's Wrestling State Championships start today in Atlantic City, and there are several local competitors looking to prove they are not only the best in the Shore Conference but in the state as a whole. Over the past few years wrestlers from this area have routinely found themselves at or near the top of the medal stand and 2012 figures to be no exception. New Names Join Region VI Champions Roster

Lacey gets first region champion since 2003

Lex Knapp will be the first to admit he's spent this season in the shadows. Despite an unbeaten record, the Lacey wrestler hasn't made the state rankings, and hasn't gotten a lot of attention. That's likely about to change, however, as the senior upset top-seeded and top-ranked Colton Bigelow to win the 220-pound title at the NJSIAA Region VI wrestling tournament on Saturday at Pine Belt Arena before 2,710. Knapp's upset gave Lacey its first region champion since 2003, and earned him Most Outstanding Wrestler honors. Toms River South saw a resurgence, with three region champions for the first time in 34 years, and four wrestlers total advancing to the NJSIAA Individual Championships in Atlantic City, which begin Friday night. Shore Conference Wrestlers Advance In Districts

Monmouth and Ocean county wrestlers on Saturday provided thrills for wrestling fans across the Shore Conference

Howell ended Jackson Memorial’s grip on the team title in Manalapan; Brick Memorial and Southern Regional continued their domination of Brick and Toms River respectively; and Ocean Township outslugged rival Raritan in Little Silver. And on a historic note, Asbury Park High School had its first district champion since 1971 and only the fourth in school history when Domingo Perez pinned his way to the championship at Brick Memorial. The NJSIAA District Wrestling Tournaments in Monmouth and Ocean counties Saturday provided thrills for wrestling fans across the Shore Conference and began the process of finding the best 14 wrestlers in New Jersey.
